The “MPI 3x3 Orientation Basketball Match”, jointly organised by the Student Affairs Office of Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and Macao University Sports Association, was held at MPI’s Multisport Pavilion on 21 October 2017. Alumni and students of MPI competed against each other in a spectacular showcase of basketball skills.

Organised by MPI’s Student Affairs Office, this 3-on-3 basketball competition is part of a series of orientation activities aiming to help new students adapt to MPI’s campus life quickly. The games helped strengthen the friendship between MPI’s alumni and current students while playing together as a team. Participants competed in male and female divisions, with the latter adopting a single round robin system. Male participants first competed in a single round robin system for a spot in the semi-finals, after which the first, second and third places were determined by elimination matches. The games saw many renowned basketball athletes in Macao playing alongside MPI’s junior students. Students from different programmes at MPI also formed teams to participate in the matches.

After successive matches, a team formed by Cheang Ka Man (Social Work programme), Yu Weixin (Design programme), Choi Chou I (Biomedical Technology programme) and Chan Sio Ngai (Management programme) won the female category with six points. Chan Sio Ngai was also recognised as the MVP of the female division. The male category faced a much fiercer competition. The teams that made it to the finals were closely matched: a team led by Sou Pak Lam, alumnus of the Physical Education programme and renowned basketball athlete of Macao, competed against another MPI team featuring Wu Wang Ip, who is currently a member of the Macao basketball selection team. After the quick-paced and spectacular finals, the MPI team comprising Wu Wang Ip, Lee Sio Kai, Lei Chi Pang and Hoi Chong Hei, all of whom are students of the Physical Education programme, took home the gold medal. Wu Wang Ip was crowned MVP of the male division.

As co-organisers of the games, MPI’s Student Affairs Office and Macao University Sports Association were pleased to have alumni and students competing against each other in these friendly matches. The “3-on-3 basketball games” have helped sustain the spirit of perseverance and solidarity of MPI members. MPI students and alumni joining this competition expressed their hopes for more sports events for them to participate in together in the future, thereby enhancing the cohesiveness of the whole Institute.
