Prof. Carlos Ascenso André

Professor Carlos Ascenso André, PhD was Dean of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra (2006-2013) and Deputy-President of the Scientific Board (1994-1996); he was also Dean of the Portuguese Catholic University – Leiria for several periods between 1992 and 2005 and is currently Director of the Portuguese Teaching and Research Centre, Macao Polytechnic Institute.
  

He has taught in the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra since 1983, gaining his tenure in 1992. He has also been a Visiting Professor at several universities including the University of East Asia, Macao (1984), the University of Hamburg and University of Göttingen (1992/93) and the University of Poitiers (1994 and 1996). He has been a Professor at MPI since May 2013.

He received his Master in Classical Literature in 1984 and his PhD in Latin Literature in 1990, both from the University of Coimbra.

His main research areas include Latin Literature from Rome and from the 16th century, and Portuguese Literature. He has been strongly engaged in collaborative projects with several lusophone countries, especially Mozambique, Timor, Brazil and Angola, and has paid particular attention to Macao, which he visited for the first time in 1984 but to which he has subsequently returned frequently. With regard to his lusophone activities he was one of the founders of Associação Internacional de Lusitnaistas as well as its Vice-President and, for three terms, its General Secretary-Treasurer.

Professor Carlos Ascenso André has participated in over 200 conferences in Portugal and elsewhere (Spain, France, Croatia, Canada, USA, Germany, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, S. Tomé e Príncipe, England, Japan and China) and is the author of 18 books and around two hundred articles in international academic journals or books.

He is a member of the following Scientific Organizations: Academia das Ciências de Lisboa / Lisbon Sciences Academy, Academia Brasileira de Filologia / Brazilian Philology Academy, Centro de Estudos Clássicos e Humanísticos da Universidade de Coimbra / University of Coimbra Classical and Humanistic Studies Centre, Centro Interuniversitário de Estudos Camonianos / Interuniversity Centre of Camões Studies, Associação Portuguesa de Estudos Neolatinos / Portuguese Association of Neolatin Studies and Associação Portuguesa de Estudos Clássicos / Portuguese Classical Studies Association.

He received the Prémio Jacinto do Prado Coelho, da Secção Portuguesa da Associação Internacional de Críticos Literários, 2006 / Jacinto do Prado Coelho Award of the Portuguese Section of Literary Criticism International Association in 2006.

He has been an Honorary Professor of MPI since 2011.
