MPI's Visit to the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) UK

To strengthen the exchange and cooperation in the area of higher education between the United Kingdom (UK) and Macao, Professor Lei Heong Iok, President of MPI, and his delegation visited the UK's internationally prominent Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) on 13th November. The delegation was warmly received by Mr. Douglas Blackstock, QAA’s Chief Executive (Interim), and other department heads. They discussed frontier work in higher education quality assurance and mutual collaboration in related areas. The meeting yielded a rich harvest.

Mr. Blackstock welcomed the delegation and noted that MPI had been the first higher education institution in Macao to undertake an internationally recognised institutional review. He expected that the successful review would further strengthen the quality assurance work of MPI and anticipated future mutual collaborations. Mr. Blackstock also introduced the QAA's role in the reform of external quality assurance across the UK, their contribution to the Teaching Excellence Framework and the debate on the future of higher education in England. QAA’s Associate Director International, Dr. Stephen Jackson, commended MPI for its good academic reputation, high efficiency, good organization and output, education information management and comprehensive quality assurance system.

President Lei introduced MPI commenting that it had long upheld the principles of student-centeredness and quality teaching, endeavouring to promote excellence in teaching quality to achieve international standards and that, after ten years of preparation, in November 2013, MPI had invited the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) to conduct an institutional review through external audit of its internal quality assurance procedures and had achieved a judgment of “Confidence”. MPI thus became the first higher education institution in Macao to have received such an honour with its teaching quality being recognised by an international assessment agency, this turning an historical new page for Macao higher education review. The same judgment results were reported for some of the UK’s best universities such as the University of Oxford and University of London.

MPI is a member of the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE) and Asia-pacific Quality Network (APQN), two important international quality assurance organisations.

Other heads of QAA attending the meeting included: Associate Director International, Dr. Stephen Jackson; Head of International, Ms. Fiona Crozier; International Adviser, Dr. Fabrizio Trifiro; Head of Business Strategy and Development, Mrs. Rachel Wallace. The meeting was very fruitful.
