MPI Held Its Graduation Ceremony for the Academic Year 2013-2014

On Tuesday, 17 June 2014, presided over by the Representative of Chief Executive of Macao S.A.R., Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Mr Cheong U and the President of Macao Polytechnic Institute Professor Lei Heong Iok, Macao Polytechnic Institute held its 2013-2014 Graduation Ceremony with nearly 600 graduates, awarded with the Outstanding Performance Awards and the bachelor’s degree. Mr Cai Siping, Deputy Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, representatives of the Executive Council, some members of the Legislative Assembly and a number of guests attended the ceremony.

Mr Cheong had it in his speech that, the Macao S.A.R. will continuously support MPI as ever, to exert its best endeavor to cultivate local talents on applied knowledge and skills, improve its education and research projects, and do its best to expand its unique features coping with the international standards. Moreover, he also hopes MPI could assist the Macao government in the development of the society, the economy and its culture.

Professor Lei is proud to announce in the graduation ceremony that MPI became the first tertiary institution in Macao to hold a successful reviewed conducted by Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (UK), achieving an appraisal of “Confidence / Full Confidence” similar to the appraisals of UK’s best universities, such as the University of Oxford and Queen Mary University of London. This achievement helps implement the tertiary education plan of the Macao Special Administrative government.

In this academic year, MPI achieves good results on its research work: the MPI Journal has been ranked one of the highest in terms of the citation of academic articles in the 2013 “Duplicated Materials from Newspapers and Periodicals”, and the reprint rate ranked 13th among 1150 tertiary institutions in China. Moreover, Professor Mao Sihui has been elected as the new President of the International Association for Intercultural Communication Studies by the Board of Directors. Assistant Professor Lang Bin proudly obtained the second prize in the 2013 State Scientific and Technological Progress Awards. Assistant Professors Chan Ka Yin and Leong Sok Lei were granted an invention patent by the State Intellectual Property Office of the P.R.C. and the invention achievements of Lecturer Tang Su Kit and Professor Tong Hoi Yee et al have obtained the National Utility Model Patent.

In the academic year of 2013-2014, MPI is proud to witness its students for numerous achievements: Li Lu Tai Long, student of Bachelor of Arts in Music, held his solo concert in Taiwan and has received favourable comments from the Taiwan media. Wong Kuan, student of the School of Physical Education and Sports won the championship of both Men’s and Senior categories of the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2014. Chao Weng San, from the School of Business has achieved the Excellent Performance Award among competitors from 47 countries and regions in the World Skills Competition. Moreover, in May this year, the a delegation of culture and arts, mainly consisted of MPI students, went to Portugal and performed in the renowned universities including University of Coimbra and the University of Lisbon. In addition, on 18 May, the President of the Portuguese Republic visited MPI, which affirmed the contribution MPI did for the co-operation between the mainland China with Lusophone countries and regions, in trade and cultural exchanges, which strengthen the determination and confidence in realizing the advantages of MPI’s education in Portuguese language teaching and research.

Rooted in Macao, MPI will continue to serve the community with cultivating local talents in applied knowledge and skills and will continue to improve and enhance the quality of teaching. MPI will maintain its high proportion of employment and higher education as high as the past decade.

In his speech, the student representative expressed his thankfulness to the Macao S.A.R. Government, the community, the teachers and staff for their teaching and advice in the past years.
