MPI Students Visit the Tea Culture House to Enhance Chinese Cultural Heritage

MPI Students Visit the Tea Culture House.

China is the home to tea culture, and Macau was one of the earliest gateways to promote Chinese tea to the West in the 17th century. In order to let students know about our Chinese tea culture and Macao’s unique position in the Chinese tea trade history, the Student Affairs Office (SAO) of MPI has organised students to visit the Tea Culture House. Through the viewing of “The Bond of Tea with Macao” Exhibition and the guided explanation, students’ awareness of traditional tea-related customs has been promoted, as well as their enjoyment of Macao’s old tea style and love of tea.

The docents explained the themes of “Tea Sets and Tea Paintings Export”, “Macao Tea House Culture”, “Ceramic Teapots Collection” and “Chinese Tea Art”.  From tea sets with typical characteristics of fusion from the East and the West, to paintings showing the process of tea planting to transportation, students got to know the past glories of the tea trade. Moreover, through the simulated scenes of Kun Nam Tea House and the exhibits of the tea houses in Macao in the 1950s and 1960s, students felt the Cantonese tea drinking experience in the past.

Ms Zhou, a student majoring in Portuguese language, has the habit of drinking tea, but she does not have a deep understanding of the tea history and tea art. From the docent’s sharing in this activity, she learned about the types of tea, and the ten tea brewing processes from tea appreciation to tea tasting. She felt that Chinese tea art blends the traditional values of Chinese culture and humanistic arts, and is well worth inheriting and promoting.

MPU is committed to promoting the whole person development of students, as well as cultivating outstanding and capable students with both talents and moral integrity from the aspects of academic knowledge, professional skills, physical and mental development, and moral cultivation.  Through a variety of thematic activities, students are exposed to different cultural fields, enhancing their understanding of traditional Chinese values and enhancing their personal qualities.
