Guidelines for Student Internship

  1. INTRODUCTION

    Internship is a form of experiential learning and an important element for students’ study in their degree programmes. It is intended to provide students with a variety of practical learning experiences in which they can observe, participate, contribute, and learn. The level of student involvement and the depth of commitment are significantly related to the benefits that the students can gain from the shared learning experiences during internship.

  2. AIMS AND EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

    1. The internship aims to provide students with an opportunity for experiential learning in their field of study and exploration within an organisation as well as to apply the knowledge they have learned to practical situations.
    2. Students are expected to have the following learning outcomes for their internship:
      1. To gain diverse learning experience and programme-related working experience in a workplace environment;
      2. To improve communication skills;
      3. To build up relationships with potential employers;
      4. To apply academic theories to practical experience;
      5. To understand the advantages and limitations of current knowledge;
      6. To work in teams and collaborate with people with diverse backgrounds;
      7. To broaden social and cultural experience, and develop social and cultural values;
      8. To prepare themselves for a life-long career.
  3. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. When a student (i.e. the intern) interns at an organisation, s/he shall normally be supervised by a staff member from the interning organisation (hereafter referred to as ‘the supervisor’) and an internship instructor from the degree programme in which the intern has enrolled.
    2. The intern is required to:
      1. Follow the policies and procedures of the internship organisations and the instruction of the supervisors;
      2. Strictly adhere to professional ethics and observe the codes of conduct of the internship organisations, together with an understanding of the nature of privacy, confidentiality and human respect;
      3. Be punctual and notify the internship supervisors of any unavoidable situations which would cause them late;
      4. Comply with the appropriate professional dress code of the organisations;
      5. Complete and submit all the assessment items by respective due dates; and
      6. Report to the supervisor and/or the instructor when encountering any difficulties or problems during the internship.
    3. The supervisor has the following roles and responsibilities:
      1. Provide internship opportunities related to the degree programme;
      2. Select suitable candidates for the internship;
      3. Determine the internship objectives and performance indicators with the intern;
      4. Provide work-related supervision, instruction and guidance to the intern;
      5. Monitor and evaluate the intern’s performance; and
      6. Liaise with the intern’s instructor at the Institute.
    4. The internship instructor has the following roles and responsibilities:
      1. Liaise with supervisor at the interning organisation;
      2. Visit the workplace during the internship;
      3. Provide feedback on the intern’s performance;
      4. Evaluate the assessment tasks submitted by the intern; and
      5. Monitor and evaluate the intern’s performance.
  4. ASSESSMENT

    The assessment methods of the internship will be determined by the degree programme in line with respective academic regulations.

  5. OTHER ISSUES

    1. Students’ activities during the internship period are covered by the group personal accident insurance of the Institute. More information about the insurance is available at the Institute’s website.
    2. At the end of the internship, students are advised to send a thank-you note to the organisation supervisors, recognising their efforts and support.
    3. Other useful information on the internship for particular degree programmes may be provided by the academic units or the programmes.
