About the Faculty

Formerly the Visual Arts Institute, the Faculty of Arts and Design of Macao Polytechnic University was established by Macao Cultural Institute in 1989 and was incorporated into the Macao Polytechnic University in 1993, and was renamed the Faculty from the School of Arts in 2022. With the longest history in offering arts programmes among other tertiary institutions in Macao, the Faculty is renowned for being a “cradle of a new generation of creative talents”. For over 30 years, the Faculty has nurtured many design practitioners in Macao as well as local personnel in visual arts and music education, film and television production professionals, band members and pop singers. Students and alumni have participated in numerous art and design competitions, exhibitions and performances worldwide, bringing honour to both Macao and Macao Polytechnic University. In response to the needs of social development, the Master of Interdisciplinary Arts and the Bachelor of Arts in Media Arts have been launched in recent years. 

The Faculty of Arts and Design is also the only institution in Macao SAR that offers diploma and degree programmes in design, visual arts and music. The mission of the Faculty of Arts and Design is to cultivate creative professionals who are able to take challenges and facilitate development in the areas of design, arts and music.

The Faculty attaches great importance to teaching and learning. With a “student-oriented, whole-person development” philosophy, the Faculty focuses on the enhancement of the overall quality and competence of both full-time and part-time staff members. After years of hard work and team-building, the Faculty now has a multicultural faculty with diverse characteristics and full commitment to the cultivation of qualified graduates.

In recent years, members of the Faculty have been actively engaged in research projects funded by the Macao Polytechnic University, Macao Foundation and the Cultural Institute of Macao. Books and monographs that have been recently published include Creativity and Education: The Current Situation and Teaching Practices of Arts and Design in Macao Higher Education, Artists To Be: About the Creative Thinking and Practice of the New Generation of Macao Artists, Artists To Be II: Stones of Other Hills—Interviews with Immigrant Artists in Macao, Research in Macao Music Education, Research in Macao Music Composition, Research in Renaissance Chorus, Prospect of Macao Higher Arts Education (on music, visual arts and design), Cultural Interpretation of Chinese Piano Music, Exploration of Difficult Piano Techniques, Research in Techniques of Small Casting Sculpture, Research in Macao Music Performance, and 3D Design in Macao. More than one hundred articles and academic papers have been published in various journals and periodicals in Macao, Mainland China and overseas such as Journal of Macao Polytechnic University, Macao Teachers' Journal, Macao Education, Journal of Sino-Western Cultural Studies, and Macao Daily, etc. Some of these academic papers have been cited by professionals in design, music and visual arts in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan and overseas.

In addition, the artistic works of our faculty have been widely exhibited, purchased and used by many agencies and government offices; and selected works of art are collected by the National Art Museum of China. In recent years, our faculty members have also been invited to be juries and judges for many events, contests and competitions. Our faculty members are active participants in various international and regional symposiums, organisers of arts education workshops and lectures for symposiums in Europe and Australia, as well as visiting conductors for Macao Orchestra and various choir clubs and concerts.

The Faculty has also been active in promoting academic exchange and cooperation with leading universities in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and other regions. We have invited prominent scholars and well-known specialists from around the world to review our programmes and give public lectures.

The Faculty is committed to creating and introducing various teaching models in the field of arts, and by organising various activities, exhibitions and community cultural activities, it penetrates deeply into the community to promote and popularize different new forms of arts, as well as contributes to the development of cultural and artistic undertakings.
