MPU awarded an Honorary Doctorate degree to Chen Guoliang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences

Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Ms. Ao Ieong U, presented the Honorary Doctorate degree in Science to Prof. Chen Guoliang

On May 31st, during the graduation ceremony of the academic year 2022/2023, Macao Polytechnic University awarded an Honorary Doctorate degree to the distinguished scientist and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chen Guoliang, in recognition of his outstanding academic achievements and significant contributions to society and educational development.

At the award ceremony, the representative of the Chief Executive of the Macao SAR and the Chancellor of the University Council, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Ms. Ao Ieong U, presented the Honorary Doctorate degree in Science to Prof. Chen Guoliang and congratulated him on his achievement. The Rector of the Macao Polytechnic University, Im Sio Kei, praised Prof. Chen as a national expert in parallel algorithms and high-performance computing, as well as a leader in the field, having a prestigious influence and status in academic and education circles both domestically and internationally. The Rector expressed the hope that the University will strengthen cooperation and exchanges with him in scientific research, innovative technology and other areas, and strive to cultivate talents in technological innovation.

Dr. Wang Yapeng of the Faculty of Applied Science at the Macao Polytechnic University, read a tribute stating that Prof. Chen is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a professor and doctoral supervisor at the University of Science and Technology of China, the Director of the National High-Performance Computing Center, the winner of the first National Teaching Master Award for Higher Education, and the former Director of the Instructional Advisory Committee for the Computer Basic Course in Higher Education under the Ministry of Education. He has undertaken more than 20 national research projects such as the National 863 Program, the National Climbing Program, the National 973 Program, and the National Natural Science Fund. He established the first national high-performance computing center and created a research and teaching base for parallel algorithms in the country. Prof. Chen has made systematic and creative achievements and significant contributions in the research field of parallel algorithms, high-performance computing, and their applications. He has undertaken more than 20 national-level projects, published more than 200 papers, and won more than 10 national and provincial-level awards for scientific and technological progress and teaching achievements, including a national second prize for scientific and technological progress. He has also trained a large number of professional talents engaged in algorithm research.
