Measurement of Social Responsibility of Macao’s Gaming Companies

How to effectively evaluate the fulfillment of social responsibilities of Macao’s gaming companies has been a problem that has plagued Macao society for a long time. Since the newly revised Gaming Law in 2022 has written the social responsibility of the gaming companies in Macao into the law, the issue of accurately measuring the social responsibility of Macao gaming companies has become more urgent. Based on the stakeholder management theory and the study of relevant government documents, media reports and disclosures of the gaming companies since the return of Macao, this study proposes a gaming corporate social responsibility measurement model based on stakeholder expectations to effectively evaluate the performance of Macao gaming companies, thus providing a foundation for measurement of the social responsibility of Macao’s six gaming companies. This study proposes a new method for evaluating corporate social responsibility, thus making up for the shortcomings of existing evaluation methods. This study has strong practicality and operability, and provides a more effective tool for Macao government and society to evaluate the performance of social responsibilities of Macao gaming companies.

The Perceptions and Practical Dilemmas of Responsible Gambling Faced by Frontline Casino Employees in Macao

This study investigated the responsible gambling perceptions of frontline casino employees of Macao gaming companies, how they identify and respond to problem gamblers, and the intervention barriers that they face in practice. The study used semi-structured questions to conduct multiple rounds of interviews with 49 frontline casino employees from 6 gaming companies in Macao. The thematic analysis of interview data show that most frontline casino employees understand responsible gambling clearly, but a few employees have significant cognitive biases; employees are generally able to identify problem but rarely proactively intervene in their problem gambling behavior. The results revealed that role ambiguity and conflict, fear of offending clients or getting themselves into trouble, fear of misidentification and lack of support, guidance or knowledge were the main barriers to prevent staff from proactively intervening in problem gambling behavior. The study believes that Macao’s responsible gaming policy has certain effects on employee cognition, but with sever difficulties in practical intervention. Strengthening staff training, clarifying the responsibilities and scope of intervention, and improving responsible gambling education for non-local gamblers are recommended to improve the practice of responsible gambling in Macao.

Latent Profile Analysis of Residents’ Place Citizenship Behavior

Residents, as vital stakeholders in tourism destinations, play a crucial role in shaping tourists’ attitudes and behaviors towards the destination. Therefore, it is crucial for destination management organizations to recognize and acknowledge the role of residents in building the destination brand. By understanding residents’ place citizenship behaviors and categorizing them based on their responses, destination management organizations can effectively tailor their strategies to manage resident involvement. In this study, conducted in Hangzhou and Zhuhai, a survey was administered to gather data from 762 and 320 residents respectively. Latent profile analysis was employed to analyze residents’ place citizenship behaviors. The findings revealed three distinct categories: indifferent, moderate, and champion. The largest proportion of residents fell into the “moderate” category, comprising approximately 50% of the sample, while the “indifferent” and “champion” categories each accounted for around one-fourth. These research findings hold valuable implications for destination management organizations seeking to harness residents’ potential in shaping the destination brand. Recognizing the different categories of residents and their place citizenship behavior enables targeted and customized management strategies. This approach can effectively engage residents as active contributors to the destination’s brand-building efforts.

PLS-SEM was adopted to analyze the valid questionnaire data. The results indicate that: red tourism study activities positively affect awe and pride; awe and pride positively affect patriotism; red tourism study activities do not directly impact patriotism but inspire patriotism through awe; awe, pride, and patriotism are positively related to tourists’ revisit intention. The findings of this study contribute to the understanding of the generation mechanism of tourist patriotism, which is beneficial to the development of red tourism in China.
