Programme Outline

The Master of Foreign Linguistics & Applied Linguistics (focusing on Translation Studies) is intended for those who wish to develop and enhance their competence in both Chinese and English languages and more importantly, their ability to translate from English to Chinese and vice versa. On completion, graduates will have acquired relevant knowledge about linguistics, literature and cultural studies that are conducive to students' translation competence. They will also have gained theoretical perspectives that help them better understand the process of translation and strategies employed in translating authentic texts.

Graduates may be able to work in the professions that require good understanding of translation and practical bi-directional (E-C and C-E) translation skills in multilingual contexts, including teaching or conducting research in translation. They can also be competitive applicants for Ph.D. programmes in linguistics or translation studies.

Award of Degree

On successful completion of the course work, including the oral defence of the thesis, the candidate will be awarded Master's Degree by Beijing Language and Culture University in compliance with all relevant requirements of “Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Academic Degrees”.

Note:The commencement of this Programme has been approved by the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of Macao SAR in 2017 (Despacho do Secretário para os Assuntos Sociais e Cultura n.º 105/2017).

The Master’s Degree in Foreign Linguistics & Applied Linguistics jointly offered by Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) and Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) is one of the achievements of the cooperation between the two institutions.

The course was approved by the Dispatch No. 120/2006 of the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture and welcomed the first batch of students in September 2008. Since its establishment more than ten years ago, the course has been continuously improved according to the actual needs of Macao. It has become an ideal choice for local students and working people who want to improve their translation skills.

Graduates of the Programme are active in the Macao government, as well as in education, language services, and tourism industry. The three-year study not only allows them to master the knowledge of language, literature and translation, but also broadens their horizons, enabling them to make great achievements in their work and contribute to the development of Macao society.
