MPU shortlisted in the top eight of the Times Higher Education Awards Asia earning international recognition in environmental technology innovation

Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) has been shortlisted as one of the top eight finalists for the "Outstanding Contribution to Environmental Leadership" category in the Times Higher Education Awards Asia 2024. This recognition showcases MPU's strengths in environmental research and education, drawing international acclaim. The award aims to honour higher education institutions demonstrating leadership in environmental contribution, with prestigious universities like the University of Hong Kong and the National University of Singapore also in the running. The winner will be announced at the end of April.

Artificial Intelligence X Medical Imaging Moving Forward with Smart Healthcare

Medical imaging, a common non-invasive technique used in physical examinations, enables the detection of physiological structures and pathological conditions within organs or tissues. Physicians employ auxiliary tools like x-rays, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to diagnose existing or potential lesions. Macao Polytechnic University is at the vanguard of integrating academia, research, and industry within the realm of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and applications. The research team on AI in medical imaging at the Faculty of Applied Sciences lives out the mission of harnessing smart technology for enhanced healthcare services. Engaging in extensive dialogues with medical professionals, in collaboration with international experts across myriad fields, the team has been relentlessly innovating, developing AI-driven solutions that prioritise clinical needs in medical imaging, stimulating the evolution of the smart healthcare industries.

MPU's 2024 Open Day showcased outstanding teaching and research achievements with enthusiastic response

The “Macao Polytechnic University Open Day 2024” was held on 6 January and has showcased the characteristics of the University’s educational approach, information on degree programmes, achievements in teaching and research, social services, and achievements as a result of international cooperation. This was done through a series of activities such as degree programme seminars, guidance sessions for further studies, thematic exhibitions, campus tours, workshops, experiential sessions as well as exchange sessions with graduates. The Open Day has attracted nearly 3000 participants, including recent high school graduates, elites, students and parents, making a very lively event.

MPU’s Research Findings on Digital Watermarking Technology Published in Top International Academic Journal

Associate Professor Yuan Xiaochen of the Faculty of Applied Sciences of Macao Polytechnic University and her research team has published a high-level academic paper related to multiple watermarking technology, “Parallel Multiple Watermarking Using Adaptive Inter-Block Correlation”, in the top international academic journal "Expert Systems with Applications". This journal is a top international academic journal in the fields of computer science and artificial intelligence. It is a “double Q1” journal; that is, it belongs to both SCIE Q1 and is also a first zone journal in the computer science category of the SCI division of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is an A-level journal recognized by the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence and is ranked 5th among artificial intelligence journals in the H-index on Google Scholar.

MPU Secures Silver Medal in the 2023 Huawei Ascend AI Innovation Competition Guangdong Finals

The Guangdong finals of the 2023 Huawei Ascend AI Innovation Competition, were held successfully at Guangdong University of Technology on September 24. Since its launch, the competition has attracted 151 teams from companies and universities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, with over 400 professional developers participating. A total of 58 high-level innovative projects advanced to the regional finals. The project "Online Ride-Hailing Price and Demand Prediction Based on a Hybrid Machine Learning Model" from Macau Polytechnic University (MPU) won the Silver Award, making it the only winning project from Macau higher education institutes.

Research Achievements in Biomembrane Studies by Scholars from MPU Published in Top Computational Mathematics Journal

In recent years, computational simulation methods have greatly enhanced the microscale understanding of biomembrane structures, and their dynamic properties and functions across various fields. Professor Guo Jingjing, Professor Liu Huanxiang and Dr. Li Shu from the Centre for Artificial Intelligence Driven Drug Discovery at Macao Polytechnic University, in collaboration with Professor Mu Yuguang from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, published a paper titled “Application of computational approaches in biomembranes: From structure to function” in July. The paper was published in WIREs Computational Molecular Science, a top-ranked computational mathematics journal (Citation score: 20.1; Impact factor: 11.4) (https://doi.org/10.1002/wcms.1679).

MPU visited Zhuhai Center for Disease Control and Prevention to promote scientific research cooperation and exchanges

In order to promote the development of the big health industry, Prof. Tong Hoi Yee, Director of Centre for Artificial Intelligence Driven Drug Discovery (AIDD) in Faculty of Applied Sciences at Macao Polytechnic University, and his team visited the Zhuhai Center for Disease Control and Prevention a few days ago. The delegation was warmly welcomed by Mei Wenhua, the Party Secretary of Zhuhai CDC, as well as by Huang Liqun, the Deputy Director, and Huang Huitao, the Director of the Microbiology Laboratory. The two parties had in-depth exchanges on scientific research project cooperation.

MPU welcomes 2,200 new students at the start of the academic year, the Rector sends a message to inherit the spirit of love for the motherland and for Macao

Macao Polytechnic University held the opening ceremony of the 2023/2024 academic year and the first MPU lecture on August 21, to launch a new study journey with 2,200 new students of Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral programmes from Macao, the Greater Bay Area, all over the country, as well as Portuguese-speaking countries, and regions overseas. Rector Im Sio Kei expressed his wishes to the freshmen to inherit the spirit of love for the motherland and for Macao, to be the pioneers of the new era, to contribute wisdom and strength to the construction of the country and Macao.

MPU and The University of Coimbra to Offer Jointly a Dual Doctoral Programme in Information Technology - Promoting the development of high-tech industries in Macao

In an effort to leverage the Sino-Portuguese platform and bolster Macao's diversified economic strategy in line with the "1+4" principle, Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) and the University of Coimbra (UC) are set to launch a dual doctoral degree programme in Information Technology. Graduates of the programme will be conferred doctoral degrees from both esteemed universities. The goal of this initiative is to foster the growth of exceptional international tech talents, thereby accelerating the expansion of high-tech industries within Macao and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

MPU Organises Educational Training in Science to Enhance Capabilities of Secondary School Students in AI Drug Research

In order to cultivate the interest of Macao secondary school students in science, technology and artificial intelligence (AI), and to inspire them to understand the key applications of AI in drug discovery and healthcare, the Centre for Artificial Intelligence Driven Drug Discovery (AIDD) of Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) has launched a series of training and scientific research activities, which have been well received by secondary school students.

The 2023 Pan-Pearl River Delta+ University IT Projects Competition Final was held at the MPU, and Eleven Universities Won the First Prize

The 2023 Pan-Pearl River Delta+ University IT Projects Competition Final, jointly hosted by Macao Polytechnic University and Macao Computer Society, was held at 3:30 pm on July 4 at Macao Polytechnic University. After two days of competition, there are totally 11 universities, including Macao Polytechnic University, Guangdong University of Technology, Central South University, Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics, Hunan University of Science and Technology, Hainan University, Fuzhou University, Xihua University, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University and National Taiwan Normal University, winning the first prize. And there are 15 and 34 universities winning the second prize and the third prize respectively. More than 300 participants from various provinces and regions, as well as teachers and students from secondary schools in Macao, attended the award ceremony, witnessing the important moment of the winners.

The 2023 Pan-Pearl River Delta+ University IT Projects Competition Final has been opened on July 3 at the Macao Polytechnic University. Thousands of students from 17 provinces and cities, including Guangdong, Yunnan, Hainan, Guangxi, Guizhou, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Sichuan, Jiangsu, Chongqing, Hubei, Heilongjiang, Xinjiang, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, participated in the competition and 60 teams entered the final.

MPU and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies to Offer Jointly the First Dual BA-BSc Programme across Macao and Guangdong

MPU Holds 2023 Graduation Ceremony with Over 800 Graduates Embark on a New Journey

The Macao Polytechnic University Graduation Ceremony for Academic Year 2022/2023 was held at 4:00 pm on May 31st at the university's multi-sport pavilion. The national flag was raised and the national anthem was sung at the graduation ceremony. More than 800 students from doctoral, master's and bachelor's degree programs graduated. At the ceremony, honorary doctoral degrees were awarded to individuals who have made outstanding academic achievements and significant contributions to social and educational development. Ms. Ao Ieong U, representative of the Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region and chancellor of University Council, the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, expressed that the SAR government will continue to support the university's commitment to the education policy of "dual emphasis on teaching and research", cultivate more outstanding talents for Macao and the country, and create better scientific research results.

MPU Awards Scholarships to 600 Outstanding Students

The Macao Polytechnic University held the 2023 Scholarship Award Ceremony at the University Auditorium on April 22. Scholarships were awarded to 600 outstanding students to recognise their excellent achievements in different academic and professional fields, and to encourage students to continue to strive for academic excellence and motivation. MPU aims to cultivate young leaders who are creative and competitive with an international perspective to contribute to the country.

Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) successfully held its hybrid 2023 Information Day on 22 April. MPU research team’s interdisciplinary academic paper published in prestigious international journal

Mu Siqing, Ph.D. student in Portuguese, Li Aoxuan and Shen Lu, Ph.D. students in Computer Applied Technology, Han Lili, Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Translation (FLT), and Professor Wen Zhisheng, have had an interdisciplinary academic paper "Linguistic Repertoires Embodied and Digitalized: A Computer-Vision-Aided Analysis of the Language Portraits by Multilingual Youth" published by the journal Sustainability. The paper has been officially published in a special issue of the journal entitled "Technology-Enhanced Language Teaching and Learning: Innovations, Challenges, and Concerns". The journal's current impact factor is 3.889.

Academic work of MPU published in top bioinformatics journal

The paper entitled "Predicting molecular properties based on the interpretable graph neural network with multistep focus mechanism" has been published by the top international bioinformatics journal, Briefings in Bioinformatics 2023, 24(1), 1-9, bbac534. The work the paper is based on was led by Professor Liu Huanxiang, Academic Leader, Centre for Artificial Intelligence Driven Drug Discovery, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Macao Polytechnic University, with Ms. Tian Yanan, a first-year doctoral student at Macao Polytechnic University, as the first author. The journal is No. 1 in the field of Mathematical and Computational Biology, with an impact factor of 13.994.

MPU won 2nd Prize of ICBC Cup Macao and advanced to the ICBC Cup China Semi-final

The "2022 ICBC Cup University Student Finance Technology & Innovation Competition - The 2nd Macau University Student Finance Technology & Innovation Competition" was successfully held on November 14. More than 76 projects from 16 universities in Macau, Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan participated, covering topics about cross-border finance, investment and finance, virtual network, digital currency, green low-carbon, intelligent customer service, etc. Two projects from Macao Polytechnic University, "Bank Biometrics Application Practice and Situation Analysis" from Li Yifei and "ICBC E-MOP Digital MOP Diversified Scenario Application" from Zhang Boliang, have won the second prize. Li even advanced to the semi-final of the National competition.

MPU won 2nd Prize of 2022-2023 Huawei ICT Competition Macau SAR - Network track

The Huawei ICT Competition 2022-2023 Macau was successfully held on 13 November. After the preliminary competition, the Macao Polytechnic University team, composed of Zhang Boliang from the Master of Science in Big Data and IoT program, Tang Xianxin, and Zhou Li Tao from the Bachelor of Science in Computing program, advanced to the final and won the second prize in the Network track.

MPU Signed Cooperation Agreement with the University of Coimbra, Portugal, to Promote Advanced Technologies in Smart Cities

The Macao Polytechnic University and the University of Coimbra, Portugal, held a ceremony at 18:00 on 24 November to sign a cooperation agreement to establish the MPU-UC Joint Research Laboratory in Advanced Technologies for Smart Cities (10:00 AM in Portugal time). This joint effort aims to further strengthen their collaboration in the training of technological and innovative talents, thereby helping Macao to accelerate the construction of smart cities, and promoting stronger ties between China and Portuguese-speaking countries in the fields of higher education and technological innovation. The agreement was signed by Professor Im Sio Kei, Rector of the Macao Polytechnic University, and Professor Amílcar Falcão, Rector of the University of Coimbra. This agreement capitalizes on the strengths of both parties in the fields of computer sciences, artificial intelligence, and information technology. It also provides a platform for technical innovations and training of talented engineers and scientists, who can make contribution to other scientific projects between China and Portuguese-speaking countries. More than 100 teachers and students from the two universities attended this ceremony.

Scholarship Fund of MOP2,880,000 Set up by Ho Chun Kei Charity Association at MPU to Nurture Talent in the Research and Development Industry

In order to nurture outstanding talents in the research and development industry in Macao, the Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) and Ho Chun Kei Charity Association have jointly established the “Mr. Ho Chun Scholarship”, which provides a scholarship fund of MOP 2,880,000 to outstanding students of the MPU PhD programme in Computer Applied Technology. The signing ceremony of the scholarship donation was held at MPU Lecture Theatre on May 11. The agreement was signed by Mr. Ho Ka Lon, Chairman of Ho Chun Kei Charity Association, and Prof. Im Sio Kei, Rector of MPU; meanwhile, a cheque was presented to Prof. Im Sio Kei by Mr. Ho Ka Lon.

MPU Advances Into to Huawei ICT Competition Global Finals

The 6th Huawei ICT Competition Asia-Pacific Region Awards Ceremony was successfully held on March 31st. The Macao Polytechnic University team, whom are registered in the Huawei Global ICT Competition-Network Track, went through several rounds of fierce competition in the Macao preliminary, final and Asia-Pacific regional competitions. Their performance really stood out. As a result, the MPU team is proudly advancing to the global finals as a regional representative.

MPU Students Win 1st Prize in Pan-Pearl River Delta Region+ University Student IT FYP Competition 2021

The Pan-Pearl River Delta Region+ University Student IT FYP Competition Final 2021 was successfully held on March 27, 2022. The competition was jointly organized by the Macao Computer Society in cooperation with Macao Polytechnic University and it attracted more than 10,000 participants from across China and Singapore. After two days of intense competition, a total of 55 teams were selected for the final and students from 11 universities won the first prize, including Macao Polytechnic University, Guangdong Ocean University, South China Normal University, Jiangsu University, Southwest Forestry University, Chongqing University of Science and Technology, Yunlin University of Science and Technology, Chung Cheng University, South China Agricultural University, Yan Cheng Normal University and Macau University of Science and Technology. The technological innovations demonstrated by the participating teams will promote further interaction and professional development of talents in the Pan-PRD region and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and will also enhance the development of innovative technology.

MPI and University of Bologna launch the first dual doctoral programme in Macao

The Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and the University of Bologna (Unibo), Italy jointly launch the first dual doctoral degree programme in Macao. The programme aims to further strengthen the cultivation of high-calibre innovative talents in the field of information technology and engineering in line with the Macao SAR government’s policies as well as the development of the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin and the Greater Bay Area. Graduates will be awarded with respective doctoral degrees by both higher education institutions.

MPI Leads Research in Vehicular Network Security and Safe Intelligent Driving

Dr. Kim Songkyoo (Amang), an associate professor in the School of Applied Sciences at Macao Polytechnic Institute, achieved outstanding research results in the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) field on connected vehicle security. The achievement was published in the SCIE-indexed journal “Mathematics” in 2021, and the title of the publication was “Enhanced IoV Security Network by Using Blockchain Governance Game.” The international Journal “Mathematics” is considered to be in the top 7% of all Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and recognized transactions in the field of mathematics. At the same time, the paper was also recognized and collected in the SCIE and Scopus databases.

MPI has developed a concatenate-designed neural network system to enhance the classification accuracy of AI

A research team from the Engineering Research Centre of Applied Technology on Machine Translation and Artificial Intelligence, Ministry of Education at the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) has investigated the concatenate-designed neural network model and its method of feature extraction from images, designed classifiers to collect features produced between network sets, and obtained results from the classifiers through the proposed normalization method for better classification. The research, contributed by PhD student Ka-Hou Chan, Professor Sio-Kei Im and Associate Professor Wei Ke, can be effectively applied to the tasks of recognition and classification and has significantly improved the accuracy and stability of the application.  The article  has been published in the internationally renowned artificial intelligence journal Neural Computing and Applications.

MPI Held "The 13th Macao-wide IT Competition – Alice 3D Programming Contest" Awards Ceremony

The Award Ceremony of the "13th Macao-wide IT Competition – Alice 3D Programming Contest", hosted by the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), co-organized by the International Gaming Standards Association (iGSA), supported by the Education and Youth Development Bureau of the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region and the Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau, was held at MPI on the afternoon of 22 July, 2021. It was officiated by Lei Ngan Lin, Vice-President of Macao Polytechnic Institute, Wan Kam Meng, Honorary Fellow of the Guangdong Institution of Engineers and President of the Macao Computer Society, Lai Iok In, the Head of the Information and Technology Division of the Education and Youth Development Bureau, Lei Kuong Leong, the Head of Information Technology Development Division of the Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau, Chan Keng Lim, Vice Principal of Pui Ching Middle School, Li Iok Meng, Vice Principal of Santa Rosa de Lima English Secondary School, Tam Seak Tim and Kong Iam Iok, Vice Principals of Escola Choi Nong Chi Tai. Participation in this competition was enthusiastic, with a total of nearly 80 teams and over 300 people registering for the competition. The First Prize winners of the secondary school category are Qian Jiahong, Ho Kwan Yuen, Tou Wai Chon and their mentor Fong Wai Sao from Escola Choi Nong Chi Tai. Their work is "Frozen Human Meets Forward-Looking Technology". The First Prize of the open category was won by Lou Wai Fo and Hoi Nei Tat for their work "Smart Baby Happy Fun V2.0".

MPI PhD Students Won the Best Student Paper Award for Research on COVID-19 Prediction

Ziyue Yu and Lihua He, two PhD students of Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), recently won the Best Student Paper Award for their paper “Deep Learning for COVID-19 Prediction based on Blood Test” at the 6th International Conference on Internet of Things, Big Data and Security (IoTBDS 2021). This is the only best student paper at IoTBDS 2021, and was widely commended by the conference participants.

MPI Held Seminar on The Role of IPv6 in 5G Technology Development

In order to strengthen the development and promotion of Internet Protocol IPv6 in Macao, to complement the active promotion of 5G technology commercialization, to further promote the development and construction of the “smart city” of Macao, and to help promote the construction of an international technology innovation centre in the Greater Bay Area, the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), with the support of the Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau (CTT), recently held a seminar on the role of IPv6 in 5G technology development. Associate Professor of the Bachelor of Science in Computing Programme of MPI, Dr. Luo WuMan, was invited to present “The Role of IPv6 in 5G Technology Development”. Associate Professor of MPI, Dr. Song-Kyoo (Amang) Kim, discussed IPv6 related applications in his presentation, “Blockchain for the Internet of Things”. The seminar was attended by more than 100 guests, including Prof. Tse Tan Sim, Director of the School of Applied Sciences (ESCA) of MPI, representatives from CTT, as well as teachers and students from the Bachelor of Science in Computing Programme.

MPI Held "The 12th Macao-wide IT Competition – ALICE 3D Programming Contest" Awards Ceremony

The Award Ceremony of the "12th Macao-wide IT Competition – ALICE 3D Programming Contest", hosted by the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), co-organized by the Gaming Standards Association (GSA), supported by the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ) and the Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau (CTT), was held at MPI on 15 December, 2020. The theme of this year’s competition is "Smart Life in Macao", which aims to allow participants to understand the application of technological innovation in real life, so as to promote the development of information technology in Macao. This competition also aims to cultivate and gather talents with comprehensive abilities in the fields of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) for the construction and development of Macao smart city, and to help Macao to contribute in building the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area into an "International Technological Innovation Centre".

In early July, Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) organised students to participate in the “Aeronautics and Astronautics Summer Camp” held by Beihang University. This summer camp facilitated university students from Beijing, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan to study together, to broaden their horizons, and to understand the development of national aeronautics and astronautics industries. MPI students thanked MPI for providing them with such a rare learning opportunity.

Portugal’s University of Coimbra Representatives Visited MPI

In order to strengthen the connections with Portuguese institutions of higher education and implement the mechanism of academic exchange by way of mutual visits, the School of Public Administration and the Student Affairs Office on behalf of Macao Polytechnic Institute (“MPI” or the “Institute”) recently received a group of representatives from the University of Coimbra (the “University”) in Portugal and held a fruitful discussion with the visiting professors and students. Led by Professor António José Mendes, who oversees the University’s foreign exchange programmes, the group comprised a sports coach and students of various academic disciplines. As soon as they arrived in Macao, a week-long schedule of academic and cultural exchange intermingled with sports training sessions began. The purpose of their visit was to facilitate the mutual communication and deepen the bilateral relationship in the hope of exploring greater avenues for cooperation.

MPI Students Take One Gold Prize and One Medallion of Excellence at 44th WorldSkills Competition

The 44th WorldSkills Competition was held in the capital of United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi from 10th to 19th October. MPI students achieved splendid results. A year 3 student of Bachelor of Science in Computing, Fong Hok Kin won the Gold Prize in the category of Web Design and Development, which is the first gold ever for Macao in the Competition, whereas a year 2 student of Bachelor of Arts in Visual Art, Chio Weng Chong was awarded the Medallion of Excellence in Fashion Technology.

To continuously enhance and nurture the interest of students and the Macao community in creative technology and 3D programming, Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) has organised the ‘Macao-wide IT Competition – ALICE 3D Programming Contest’ every year since 2008. Now in its ninth year, this competition has become very popular in the local academic sector. The theme of this year’s contest is ‘Macao – our livable city’.

MPI students win silver award at the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition

Students and teachers from the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) participated in the grand finals of the ‘2017 Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition’ held in Hong Kong from 3-5 July. Tens of thousands of university students took part in this annual event which aims to promote innovative thinking. A project team comprising four MPI students: Lam Choi Ut, Song In Man, Ngai Chong Cheong and Lai Chi Meng won the silver award at the competition, bringing great honour to Macao. The student team worked on a project entitled ‘Big-data based smart parking management solution’ under the supervision of Dr. Jacky Tang, Associate Professor of MPI’s Computing programme.

The 18th IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks, WoWMoM), organised by Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and IEEE Computer Society, the Technical Committee on Computer Communications, Queen Mary University of London, UK, and Missouri University of Science and Technology, USA, came to a close at MPI on 15 June. Delegates engaged in various dynamic academic exchanges, agreeing that this conference was very informative and fruitful.

Inauguration of the 18th IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks

The 18th IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM 2017) was inaugurated at Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) on 13 June. Over 130 scholars from 26 countries/regions and 71 universities and research institutes gathered in Macao to discuss the latest global trends in science and technology. The symposium covers a wide range of technical aspects of wireless communications, the Internet of Things, big data and smart cities. The organiser hopes to demonstrate the development and the strength of science and technology in Macao through this joint symposium in order to enhance the level of scientific research in wireless communications, network and mobile technology, multimedia networks and related areas such as the concept of smart cities.

Macao Polytechnic Institute’s research patent was invited to be presented at the G7- Environment 2017 and deployed in Portugal and Italy respectively

On June 6, Macao Polytechnic Institute’s (MPI) research patent in Big Data Application, “Canarin: A cloud-based real-time environmental monitoring system”, was invited by the University of Bologna, Italy, to be presented at the G7-Environment 2017 of the 43rd G7 Summit held in Italy, and was commended by experts and scholars from all over the world. To promote cross-cultural / cross-country dialogue and national cooperation, interaction, unity and sustainable development, forums devoted to environment, health, transportation, culture, science, agriculture, finance, labor etc. have been convened. Professor Marcus Im, Vice President of MPI, led a delegation to attend the forum.

The symposium covers a wide range of technical aspects of wireless communications, the Internet of Things, big data and smart cities. Topics include energy-efficient multimedia networks, next-generation networks, wireless network analysis and optimization, context-awareness, wearables and social networks, localization and tracking technology, analytics and machine learning, mobile data offloading, multimedia system optimization, resource management and quality-of-service provisioning.

Collaboration of Macao Polytechnic Institute and Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau Strengthened

To continuously enhance the collaboration between Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau (CTT) on the next generation of Internet Protocol (IPv6), Professor Marcus Im, the Vice President of MPI, Dr. Rita Tse, the Director of the School of Public Administration, and Dr. Chan Tong Lam, the Coordinator of the Computing Programme welcomed Mr. Francisco Leong, the Department Head of the Telecommunications Technologies and Resource Management of CTT, Mr. Billy Ip, the Head of the Division of the Telecommunications Technologies, and Mr. Lei Kuong Leong, the Head of the Division of the Resource Management. They exchanged their opinions in the collaboration of the promotion, research and development of the IPv6 networking protocol in Macao. Despite the fact that IP addresses are running out, the demand of IP addresses continues to increase. IPv6 becomes the solution to resolve this situation as it provides almost unlimited number of IP addresses. Both parties agreed to work together and be well-prepared for the changeover from IPv4 to IPv6.

To strengthen the collaboration and academic exchanges in higher education between Macao and the United States, together with the goals of fostering scientific research activities, promoting teaching quality, and broadening the students’ horizons, Professor Jayathi Y. Murthy, Dean of the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, has visited the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) recently and received a warm welcome from Professor Marcus Im, the Vice-President of MPI. During her visit, she exchanged views with the faculty staff and the students from the Computing Programme of MPI. Professor Murthy congratulated MPI on its success in the academic and research achievements, both of which have obtained international recognition through acclaimed accreditation organisations. She hoped that the visit would further deepen the collaboration between the two universities.

MPI Computing Programme Accredited by UK IET Again

The Bachelor of Science in Computing programme at Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) has been accredited once again by the UK’s Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). This programme, first accredited by the IET in 2011, is the earliest engineering degree programme in Macao successfully going through international academic review. Students of this programme from the 2009/2010 cohort onwards are eligible upon graduation to obtain internationally recognised professional qualifications in the UK.

The awards ceremony of the contest was held at MPI’s lecture theatre on 29th July, during which the ‘first prizes’ of the secondary school and open categories, the ‘most creative idea prize’ and ‘merit prizes’ were awarded. The winning projects - ‘Smart Macao Connects You and Me’ from the open category and ‘Smart Planet’ from the secondary school category - were also on display at the ceremony.

“2016 Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition” Successfully Held in MPI

The “2016 Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition”, jointly organised by Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and Macao Computer Society, was successfully completed in MPI on 5th July. Over 50 teams from 13 cities and regions within the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region, including Guangdong, Jiangxi, Fujian, Hunan, Hainan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing, Guangxi, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao; and more than 20,000 students participated in the competition. Among all, Macao Polytechnic Institute, South China University of Technology, Southwest Forestry University, Xiamen University of Technology and Hainan University received the Gold Award.

Macao Polytechnic Institute visits University of Coimbra in Portugal to attend IEEE International Symposium

A team of researchers from Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) attended and presented academic papers at the world-leading Seventeenth International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM 2016) which was held at the University of Coimbra in Portugal from 21st to 24th June. During this year’s symposium, the organiser - the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) - announced that the upcoming eighteenth symposium will take place at MPI in 2017. Following MPI’s efforts in the past two years and its subsequent successful bid to host this event, it is expected that over 100 renowned researchers and practitioners worldwide will gather at the Institute next year to promote scientific and academic developments in Macao.

MPI Holds Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition

The “2016 Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition” will be jointly organized by Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and the Macao Computer Society on July 4-5, 2016 at MPI. The competition has four major aims: first, to promote the field of information technology in Macao education and thereby to become more application-oriented, market-oriented and society-oriented; second, to help cultivate the best IT talents for the Pearl River Delta Region (PDR)'s communities and economies; third, to provide students and teachers in Macao a cooperation and exchange platform for “exchanges, friendships, mutual learning, and improvements”; and fourth, to further enhance cooperation in the field of higher education and information technology between Macao and the PDR, leading to cooperative interaction for joint development while also expanding the space for regional development.

Computer Scientist Xiong Zhang Receives MPI Honorary Professorship

Macao Polytechnic Institute is pleased to announce that it has conferred an honorary professorship on Professor Xiong Zhang. Professor Xiong is a computer scientist and works at Beihang University. As an honorary professor of MPI, Professor Xiong will help strengthen inter-varsity academic collaboration and reinforce MPI’s research development in the Applied Sciences. The conferment ceremony was held on 6 May 2016, together with Professor Xiong’s academic lecture on “The Era of Big Data”. Professor Xiong received the letter of appointment from MPI President Professor Lei Heong Iok. They both noted the long-term collaboration between MPI and Beihang and anticipated that new heights will be reached after this event.

Professor Li Chunming Meet With Students

Professor Li Chunming, Deputy Director of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Hubei Province and Secretary of the Leading Party Members’ Group, paid a visit to Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) on 14 October 2015 to learn about the campus life of MPI's first cohort of outstanding Hubei students. Meeting the students together with Professors Lei Heong Iok and Yin Lei, respectively President and Vice President of MPI, Professor Li encouraged the students to work hard and to prepare for a future contributing to the development of joint ventures between Hubei province and the Portuguese speaking countries.

Father of the Internet Encourages MPI Students to Engage in Innovative Research Activities

With a view to continuously improving the quality of its teaching, Macao Polytechnic Institute engages in exchanges with top-class universities from around the world in areas such as teaching, research and student learning, in order to strengthen the sharing of information and resources between MPI and other higher education institutions. The “2015 Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition”, jointly organised by Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and Macao Computer Society, was successfully held in MPI. Over 50 teams from 13 cities and regions within the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region, including Guangdong, Jiangxi, Fujian, Hunan, Hainan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing, Guangxi, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. After a series of keen competitions all awards have been confirmed.

The “2015 Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition” will be held in Macao Polytechnic Institute to promote regional cooperation and joint development.

To foster cooperation in tertiary education and information technology between Macao and the Pearl River Delta Region (PDR), the “2015 Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition”, jointly organized by Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and Macao Computer Society, and co-organized by computer societies across China, is set to take place in Macao between July 3-4, 2015. The competition is intended to promote the development of education in the field of information technology in Macao, and to help cultivate the best IT talents for the PDR’s communities and economies. The competition attracts tens of thousands of college students to participate each year and MPI hopes that through it Macao can serve as a platform for “exchanges, friendships, mutual learning, and improvements” for cooperation and exchanges for college students in the PDR. This will further enhance cooperation within the PDR, leading to cooperative interaction for joint development and expanding the space for regional development.

Visit by the Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science, UCLA

With the aim of strengthening international academic exchange and opportunities to cooperate with internationally renowned universities, as well as to broaden our students’ opportunities to study and enjoy exchange opportunities overseas, MPI invited Professor Vijay K. Dhir, Dean of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science of the University of California Los Angeles, to visit once again in March 2015.

MPI Launches its “Bachelor of Social Sciences in Sino-Lusophone Trade Relations” and “Global Portuguese” Textbook

The launching ceremony for MPI’s new “Bachelor of Social Sciences in Sino-Lusophone Trade Relations” and the text book “Global Portuguese” was held on 26th March in Lecture Theatre 1, Wui Chi Building, Macao Polytechnic Institute. Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Mr Tam Chon Weng, extended his best wishes and visions for the future, with President Lei Heong Iok expressing his gratitude and MPI’s determination to further promote Sino-Lusophone relations.

President of UK’s Institution of Engineering and Technology Visits MPI Strengthening Mutual Collaboration in Quality Assurance and International Certification

The President of the UK’s Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), Mr. Barry Brooks (CEng), visited Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) on 11 June 2014. During the visit he commended the endeavours of MPI in quality assurance and international certification and expressed his anticipation of strengthening mutual collaboration and exchange in the areas.
