Workshop: Introduction to Survey Data Analysis

A workshop on the application of IBM SPSS 26.0 in survey data analysis was organized by the Management program of the Faculty of Business, Macao Polytechnic University recently, and the speaker was Prof. W.M. To of our Faculty. Two faculty members and twelve Management students attended the workshop.

Prof. W.M. To described how a questionnaire can be designed and a theoretical model can be established. He indicated that the quality of the analyzed results depends on the quality of the collected survey data. Therefore, researchers should pay utmost attention to the data collection procedure and ensure that respondents would understand the impacts of their responses on the survey. Prof. W.M. To then demonstrated how to define each variable in “Variable View” and import data from Excel to IBM SPSS 26.0. He and participants checked the statistical properties of the collected data using various functions. They also performed some statistical tests including one-sample t-tests, independent-samples t-tests, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) to explore whether respondents’ responses on items were significantly greater than the midpoint and whether demographic variables such as gender, age group, etc. affected the collected data. Prof. W.M. To demonstrated how to obtain mean item scores using “Transform - Compute Variable” and performed correlation and regression analyses. During this two and a half hours workshop, faculty members and students got hand-on experience.
