The Master of Chinese-Portuguese Translation and Interpreting is designed to develop language competences and professional knowledge in the field of Chinese to Portuguese and Portuguese to Chinese translation and interpreting.
After a first semester in common, students will follow one of the 2 specializations: translation or interpreting.
During the 2 year Programme, the focus is on the practice of translation and interpreting techniques in different contexts. Upon completion, students should be able to show an outstanding performance in their specific domain either it is translation or interpreting.
The programme emphasises quality of education. In order for graduates to become qualified professionals as well as productive members of society, the programme does not only facilitates the students’ mastering of professional knowledge and skills, but also puts a lot of effort into enhancing students’ personal development.
The programme has a team of experienced and professional lecturers and academics as its full-time teaching staff. The school is equipped with language and interpretation laboratories, which provide the students with the best practice environment for learning.
Programme objectives 課程目標
This programme aims to cultivate professional Chinese-Portuguese translators and interpreters. With two specializations (translation and interpreting), the programme further systematically enhances the communication and translation skills of the students; consolidate their translation knowledge in different fields such as administrative, legal, commercial and audiovisual languages; and enables them to master the use of high-technology in translations.

Upon the completion of this programme, the graduate should be able to:
- Develop critical thinking skills on the practical uses of language and translation.
- Acquire skills of theoretical thought and translational practice transferable to the multiple fields of action of the translator / interpreter.
- Use different approaches in the translation activity, making decisions and using different translation strategies, in a conscious and theoretically consistent way.
- Reinforce and consolidate translation and interpretation techniques and practices, such as, working with tools to support translation and technological skills required by the current translation market.
- Promote the construction of scientific knowledge and its practice in texts of high quality, through the use of critical tools.
- Develop the ability to work as a team in real work situations.
- Develop the ability to deal with the unexpected in real work situations.

How will you learn? 如何學習
The School promotes active learning within a context of clear learning objectives. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning. Most subjects have a weekly element and in some courses collaborative work will be required. We expect informal work groups to emerge particularly in the more numerically based subjects. Clear guidance on basic and supplementary reading is given.
Students are expected to acquire and integrate knowledge into the real life situation through “Learning by Doing’. This also provides the chance for the students to meet their potential employers and understand their future working environment. Apart from their regular class teaching, teachers are available for tutorship 6 hours per week. During the programme students will have the chance to apply their knowledge and skills, participating in short term activities prepared along with local professional partners.
How will you be assessed? 如何評核
The forms of assessment used are continuous assessment and end-of-subject tasks or projects . Each subject has its own composition, which is stated in the subject syllabus. The assessment methods include assignments, language and interpretation laboratory practices, presentations, projects, tests and papers for theoretical subjects are usually adopted. Clear guidance on all assessment methods are given, emphasizing on how to avoid plagiarism, together with the rules and procedures.
Assessment papers will be reviewed by Examination Board, and then by External Examiners. All examination papers go through a moderation marking procedure. All first class and fail scripts together with a representative sample of intermediate scripts are sent to the External Examiners for quality control.
How is the programme structured? 課程架構
The programme has 2 years, and 4 semesters. The first semester of Y1 is common to all students. After this semester students will be divided in 2 specializations: translation and interpreting. On semester 2 Y1 and semester 1 Y2 students can choose one elective course. On semester 2 Y2, students must complete a project report in order to obtain their master degree.

What are the Entry Requirements? 入學條件
According to Article 3 of Academic Regulations Governing Master's Degree Programmes of MPI, an applicant shall be considered for admission to a master’s degree programme of MPI if s/he:
holds a Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent from an accredited higher education institution;
fulfils other admission criteria prescribed by the programme of study concerned, such as, apply on due date, sends all the documents, including 2 recommendation letters and has language proficiency certificates in Portuguese and/or Chinese;
passes the interview.
How do we listen and act on your feedback? 如何聽取及回應學生的回饋
- Every class will have one or two student representatives responsible for transmitting all students questions and needs to the Coordination and to the School.
- A student tutoring system is set up to listen and help students of each school year. Every class will have a tutor (teacher) responsible for transmitting all students questions and needs to the Coordination and to the School.
- Weekly office hours are available for consultation and advice.
- Programme level dialogues are/and will be held each semester. Information and opinions from these sources will be channelled back to the School Director and/or Coordinator for meetings to discuss possible solutions and improvements.
- Staff-Student Dialogue Sessions (institutional level) in which responses are given to the questions from the students, and the programme will follow up the related issues.

Every year, we invite renowned scholars to give seminars or workshops in our programme. These activities are very helpful for teachers' teaching and students' learning. We have protocols with local partners that can provide practical experience on translation and interpreting for our students throughout the programme.

Support for students with disabilities 身心障礙學生支援
Macao Polytechnic Institute has in place an institution-wide policy to ensure that all student needs are taken care of and a supportive and accessible learning environment is maintained. When cases of special needs are notified or identified, special arrangements are made on a case-by-case basis with the joint effort of the programme and various student support services of the Institute, such as the Registry, the Student Affairs Office, the Information Technology Department and the Campus Management and Development Department, etc. to provide the necessary support.

Each semester, our school will arrange different kinds of extra-curricular activities to provide opportunities for both our students and potential employers. Our students have opportunities to act as translators or interpreters in several professional institutions in Macao as internship opportunities and transferable skills.
