The PhD programme in Computer Applied Technology is a research degree, one that prepares its graduates to be a pioneer and proponent of cutting-edge information technologies addressing a broad range of information-related phenomena over interdisciplinary settings, and develop a multifaceted perspective that explores the intersection between data science, computer science, human-centered computing, aritificial intellengence and the social-technological environments pertaining to Macau and Greater Bay area region of China.
To pave the way for Smart City construction and development in Macau, our PhD students, who possess the essential IT knowledge, have the ability to innovate and bring about synergy of IT technologies, which is vitally important to produce smart applications. Their exemplary research skills and holistic perspective can be leveraged to establish a smart city in Macau where the western culture meets that of the east. With the alacrity to become one of the world’s leading Smart City, Macau has a huge demand for talents, due to its research centers and IT infrastructure, and our students will become the ideal candidates because of their sets of application-oriented and research skill.
As the Greater Bay Region of China is gradually transforming into a global center of high technology and innovation, there is an unprecedented demand of high-quality researchers, innovators and IT specialists to support the rapid growth of high-tech industries and companies in the Region. Studies have revealed that there will be a severe shortage of local IT researchers and talents with Region-specific interdisciplinary skills, and the burden of nurturing these young talents falls on the local universities in the Region. As such, our PhD Students will be among the finest research talents in the Greater Bay Region of China, leveraging the unique geographical advantage of Macau and its social-technological environment. This is attributed to our programme’s special focus on information and society, addressing emerging issues involving IT-related governance, communities, media convergence and security pertaining to Macau and the the Greater Bay area.
The recent emergence of massive data in various areas and Internet-of-Things (IoT) have given rise to the new paradigm of data-driven science and decision-making using machine learning. Massive transaction data enables business trend prediction, customer personalization, and intelligent product recommendation. In order to harness the opportunities of data-driven technologies, the society requires expertise to collect, model, manage and extract insights from big data that originates from both information systems and IoT sensors. With such global-wide technological vision on data science and IoT, our PhD students may contribute to the advancement and applicaiton of information science and engineering, as well as the dissemination of new knowledge in these fields. A PhD in Computer Applied Technology well fits the demands for global research talents with cross-disciplinary knowledge and skills who can cope with the fast pace of the technological advancement in the field.
This programme includes three taught modules, Advanced Topics in Computer Applied Technology, Selected Topics in Big Data and Smart Society and Research Methodology and Ethics, and an original research Thesis. The students will also need to pass a PhD Candidature Confirmatory Examination. The PhD students are expected to conduct self-study on the technical knowledge and skills relevalent to their research.

The PhD in Computer Applied Technology is designed to meet the demands for a new kind of IT researchers – who represents a wide range of expertise that includes the ability to:
- Create new knowledge or originality in the application of knowledge in Computer Applied Technology in widely divergent fields of study;
- Research on an advanced and contemporary IT-related topic, including artificial intellegence, systems and networks, data analysis;
- Critically assess and analyze an advanced technical issue, upon which the mastery of a body of knowledge for a defined scholarly field is demonstrated;
- Write research proposal which captures the relevant issues and identifies research problems;
- Plan, execute, and report scholarly research project;
- Publish and present orally research papers.
Programme graduates will be able to pursue careers in various Computing-related fields, including Data Science, Information Technology and Smart City Development as well as seeking positions from Industry, Government and Academic Institute in the Greater Bay area of China or abroad, where the graduates may initiate and carry out original research in multiple scientific domains.

How will you learn? 如何學習
The programme will comprise:
- An independent research project that makes an original contribution to knowledge, written up in the form of a thesis.
- Research training courses include lectures and workshops, in which students may acquire discipline specific skills and generic/transferable skills. Student attendance and participation in research training is monitored at each session.
How will you be assessed? 如何評核
In taught courses, the assessment methods can be varied, including but not limited to assignments, written exam, presenation, or term report. In addtion to pass the PhD Candidture Confirmatory Examination during 12-24 months of their study, students are requried to submit and pass a original research thesis embodying their research work. The assessment of the thesis normally takes the form of a viva voce examination, conducted by the Thesis Examination Panel.
How is the programme structured? 課程架構
The PhD in Computer Applied Technology Programme consists of three compulsory taught modules and one doctoral thesis. The normal period of study is 3 years. The stududents are expected to take three compulsory modules during their 1st semester of study, submit a detailed research proposal and pass the PhD Candidture Confirmatory Examination during 12-24 months of study and the doctoral thesis for the remaining time of study.

What are the Entry Requirements? 入學條件
According to Article 3 of Academic Regulations Governing Doctoral Degree Programmes of MPI, an applicant shall be considered for admission to a doctoral degree programme of MPI if s/he:
(i) a Master’s degree or the equivalent, or
(ii) a Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent, with ‘excellent’ academic performance from an accredited higher education institution;
b) fulfils other admission criteria prescribed by the programme of study concerned; and
c) satisfies the examiner(s) in an interview (if required).

All students have access to the MPI Counseling Services, Students' Union, Careers Service and Student Support Services through the Student Affairs Office. Students may make their complaints through different channels; for instance the Supervisor, Academic Advisor, Programme Coordinator, the Programme Dialogue Meeting, School Dialogue Meeting, and the Institute Dialogue Meeting. The Programme Dialogue Meeting with students is designed to respond to the needs of students and discuss programme related issues. Regular meeting is scheduled for this purpose. School Dialogue Meeting, that is convened once each year with students, provides a forum for consultation and discussion between School and students. Other channels of feedback include Graduate and Employer Surveys and Student Surveys conducted annually. Normally, the School Director will act on the students' feedback accordingly, based on the recommendations of the Programme.
Academic support and guidance 教學支援及指導
An orientation workshop for first year students is held at the beginning of the 1st semester to explain the nature and the requirements of the PhD programme. All students receive a copy of the handbook for the relevant stage and have access to the MPI's Intranet system which offers: (1) Student’s e-services; (2) E-mail communication with staff and other students; (3) Access to learning and teaching materials through electronic learning management system; (4) Access to all MPI libraries and to the Institute’s computer labs or other computer facilities including all the research or project labortary dedicated for students of the PhD Programme. All students are allocated research supervisors (may also include co-supervisors), who will be responsible for facilitating the student's successful passage throughout their study of the PhD programme. In addition, each cohort of the students is allocated an Academic Advisor for all matters related to their academic experience. Effective environment will be provided for students to conduct research. All students will also have the opportunities to conductresearch work in the specific research centers/labortaries at MPI.

Macao Polytechnic Institute has in place an institution-wide policy to ensure that all student needs are taken care of and a supportive and accessible learning environment is maintained. When cases of special needs are notified or identified, special arrangements are made on a case-by-case basis with the joint effort of the programme and various student support services of the Institute, such as the Registry, the Student Affairs Office, the Information Technology Department and the Campus Management and Development Department, etc. to provide the necessary support.

Graduates from the PhD Programme will have developed a range of cognitive and practical skills together which will be applicable to different context beyond academia. To broaden the participation of students in their communication with the global Computing community, the PhD Programme promotes joint research projects with organisations, student activities, and overseas exchanges. Throughout the academic year, the PhD Programme also invites external speakers to share their experience with our students, by giving relevant seminars. Industrial Advisory Meeting organised by the PhD Programme is held at least annually to provide the PhD Programme with valuable industrial advices and feedbacks on the performance of our graduates.
