MOOCs: analysis and reflection of this new opportunity in the context of Macao
Sílvia Ferrão (Macao Polytechnic Institute)
Abstract

Information and communication technologies (ICT) are constantly evolving and the way in which human beings learn is also constantly changing. In this context of innovation, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) have played an increasing important role.
This work begins by distinguishing the concepts MOOC, xMOOC and cMOOC, followed by a reflection of the state-of-the-art in this area. Some existing initiatives are presented from Europe, United States, Brazil and China. The main advantages, challenges and changes provided by this new teaching-learning format are analysed, as well as their potential for lifelong learning.
We have done a brief description of projects underway in Hong Kong, and at Macau University.
Finally, we present the results of a survey carried out in Macau, where the profile and perception of the participants regarding the MOOCs was verified.

Though this is a very nascent area where much remains to be done, we present a reflection on this disruptive teaching model and its implications for Higher Education Institutions (HEI), and for the broader society in Macau.
