Towards a Professional Bachelor’s Degree: Faculty of Geomatics, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka
Malavige D.E.K. Gunathilaka (Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka)
Abstract

Faculty of Geomatics is a unique faculty in the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, which introduced the Bachelor of Science in Surveying Sciences degree programme. This was the first time in the history of the university system in Sri Lanka that such a degree programme was introduced by a university. Producing graduates in a professional field requires an exclusively planned curriculum, addressing the prevailing professional requirements, and should also be timely revised by considering the variations occurring contiguous to that profession. Faculty has identified this and a whole new curriculum was developed. The key aspects of this new curriculum were the transformation of the traditional teacher centered learning into the student centered learning and with special focus on outcome based education and inculcating soft skills. Finally, this program has been accredited by several international professional institutions and became a world-class degree awarding institution in the field of Geomatics.
