A Case Study of Student Engagement at the Macao Polytechnic Institute

In March 2015, the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) conducted its annual survey on Student Engagement. 610 of the 787 first-year students participated in the survey. The survey measures the five key areas of student engagement and is reported through questions ranging from quality of academic instruction to participating in extra-curricular activities.

The Cronbach’s alpha was found to be 0.81. This yielded an instrument that showed strong internal consistency. The findings revealed that the most engaged level was Enriching Educational Experiences, whereas the least engaged level came from Student-Faculty Interaction. As part of the survey, students were also asked an open-ended question which allowed them to voice their own thoughts on which area within the Institute is in need of improvement for enhancing engagement.

The student engagement data can be used to identify areas of Institutional strength as well as aspects of the undergraduate experience that may warrant attention.
