New Programme in International Chinese Language Education at MPI

MPI’s new programme in International Chinese Language Education is to facilitate the development of the bilateral exchange platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.

Professor Lei Heong Iok introduces
the distinctive features of the programme.

Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) will offer a new Bachelor of Arts degree programme in International Chinese Language Education in the 2016/2017 academic year, with the launching ceremony held today (31 March 2016). MPI President Professor Lei Heong Iok noted that this is the first Bachelor’s programme offered by Macao’s higher education institutions in the field of International Chinese Language Education. Filling the gap in the higher education history of Macao, this programme will facilitate not only the development of the bilateral exchange platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries but also the implementation of the country’s ‘One Belt One Road’ strategy. This programme is open for application from now till 6 May 2016 at MPI’s admission website.

This new programme offered by MPI aims to cultivate quality Chinese language professionals well-versed in Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), English and Portuguese with global vision and outstanding cross-cultural communication competence. This programme adopts the ‘3+1’ model – three years at MPI and one year in Portugal or Beijing. Students who are native speakers of Chinese will have one year of their study conducted in Portugal while those who are not will spend that one year in Beijing Language and Culture University. Graduates of this programme may serve as secondary school teachers as recognised by the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government. Apart from that, they could also engage themselves in fields such as business, commerce, administrative management, media and communication, and cultural and creative industries. This programme opens up a new and promising pathway for the young people of Macao and Mainland China in the international education and promotion of the Chinese language.

MPI’s Bachelor of Arts programme in International Chinese Language Education is open for application from now till 6 May 2016. Interested candidates may apply for admission via MPI’s Macao Secondary School Principal Recommendation Scheme or online at www.ipm.edu.mo/admission. Those who have applied for MPI’s other programmes but are interested in this one may express their intention of programme change at the Registry of MPI (no additional application fee will be charged). For more information, please contact MPI’s Registry at tel. 8599 6111 / 6103 / 6149.
