Welcome to the website of the School of Languages and Translation of MPI!
The School of Languages and Translation (ESLT) has its origin in the former Expedient Chinese School, which was established by royal decree in 1905. In 1992, Ordinance 48/92/M approved the establishment of ESLT and set up various regulations governing MPI, and, based on the Decree-law 16/92/M, ESLT merged with the Technical School of the Department of Chinese Affairs, which had been in charge of translator training.
Since its establishment to date, ESLT has been dedicated to training Macao SAR Government’s much needed personnel and broadening the scope of language and translation teaching. In addition to the existing Chinese-Portuguese Translation Programme, the Chinese-English Translation Programme was established in 2000 and the BA Programme in International Chinese Language Education in 2016, followed by the BA in Portuguese Language offered in 2017. In 2019 the Master’s Programme in Chinese-Portuguese Translation and Interpreting commenced, and the beginning of 2020 witnessed the offering of the PhD Programme in Portuguese Studies. We have achieved notable results in the areas of language and translation teaching, research and training, accomplishing a comprehensive training system that comprises the bachelor, master and PhD degree levels.
ESLT is an academic unit of a multilingual and multicultural nature. Its optimal environment relies on an excellent faculty and high quality student cohorts. Our bilingual teaching staff and native speakers of English and Portuguese work together to ensure the outstanding quality of language and translation teaching. The local students, the Lusophone students and the exchange students from the colleges in Beijing and the Greater Bay Area have become ESLT’s beautiful landscape – their dynamism, their sparkling intellectual exchange and the interweaving of languages make our campus life culturally rich and colourful.
It is worth noting that the BA Programme in Chinese-Portuguese/Portuguese-Chinese Translation and Interpretation passed the academic review of the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES) of Portugal, an international authoritative agency, while the BA Programme in Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation obtained the accreditation of the Academic Quality Agency for New Zealand Universities (AQA). Guided by MPI’s proactive internationalisation strategy, ESLT provides faculty and students with a variety of overseas learning and research opportunities. Our faculty and students are expected to join in the endeavour of our nation’s development – “seize the day and live it to the fullest” – making contributions to China, the Lusophone and “One Belt, One Road” countries, as well as to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in terms of language and translation services, academic exchange and other related fields.
