MPI students experience the charm of traditional Chinese martial arts

MPI students experience traditional Chinese martial arts

In order to promote the Chinese traditional culture, the Student Affairs Office of the Macao Polytechnic Institute has organised series of activities to enhance students’ Chinese traditional culture experience. As a start, MPI invited the Tai Chi world champion, head master of Wushu General Association of Macao, as well as a current student of the Master of Science in Sports and Physical Education Programme of MPI, Mr Iao Chon In to teach the essence of Chinese martial arts, which enabled students to experience the depth of Chinese martial arts and learn about the long history, so as to enhance students’ interest in Chinese culture.

The activity attracted many international students to participate, demonstrating the attractiveness of Chinese traditional culture. Ermickson, a Cape Verde student of the Public Administration Programme, said that under the enthusiastic guidance of the coach, he had learned the characteristics of Chinese Martial arts, and their difference from other martial arts.  By practicing the classic routines, he was much benefited. Wan, a student of the Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation Programme, said that through this activity, she felt the charm and fun of Chinese martial arts, and by exercising the mantis routine under the demonstration of the coach, she learned that martial arts not only strengthened our health, but also trained our courage and endurance.

Macao Polytechnic Institute has always concerned about the all-round development of youth, and has been committed to promoting the growth of students’ physical and mental health. Over the years, it has actively held diversified campus activities. This year, the Student Affairs Office has launched a series of traditional Chinese culture experience activities including Chinese martial arts, tea art, lion dance, dragon boat and other Chinese cultural traditions. Through all these, the Institute hopes to strengthen students’ understanding of Chinese history and culture, enhance students’ sense of patriotism, and contribute to the cultivation of Macao’s young talents with their love for the motherland and Macao.
