MPI’s General Education Scheme Promotes All-Round Development and Activates Lifelong Learning

The Macao Polytechnic Institute launched a knowledge-enrichment extra-curricular programme of educational activities, the General Education (“GE”) Scheme, to provide opportunities for continuous education and lifelong learning. Aligned with the Macao SAR Government’s youth policy, the GE Scheme aimed at strengthening talent training and promoting cross-disciplinary learning, and was open to MPI’s students and staff as well as the general public. The educational activities under the GE Scheme were offered by different academic and research units of the Institute in three periods each academic year (the autumn semester, the spring semester and the summer period) in such forms as training courses, workshops and seminars, covering a wide spectrum of topics from language, law and arts, to history, culture, social issues and public policies. Both internal and external participants said they had learnt a lot and benefited immensely from the GE Scheme.

Mr. Chen, a PhD student studying in public policy, actively participated in the GE Scheme and attended many seminars, including a series of seminars on Macao’s Basic Law and the SAR governance under the "One Country Two Systems" principle, an online seminar on the historical connection between Macao and Coimbra, a public seminar on the long-term mechanism of Macao's social policy, a video art appreciation seminar, a community cultural lecture of Macao historic district and a follow-up community field trip. The richly diverse educational activities enabled Mr. Chen to gain a broader perspective of the legal landscape, historical development, social culture and public affairs in Macao, deepening his understanding of the city’s development and changes in policies and generating many fresh ideas for his doctoral thesis writing.

Capitalising on its academic advantage and building on a solid foundation of academic expertise, MPI is committed to nurturing diverse talents and continues launching various knowledge enhancement initiatives in line with the Macao SAR government’s policies to promote the all-round development in youths, encourage continuous education and activate lifelong learning. The academic and research units offering education activities under the GE Scheme include: School of Languages and Translation: “One Country Two Systems” Research Centre: Centre for Portuguese Studies: MPI-Bell Centre of English: Cultural and Creative Industries Teaching and Research Centre: Centre of Sino-Western Cultural Studies: and the Social, Economic and Public Policy Research Centre.
