MPI’s Open Day Display of Teaching and Research Achievements Received Overwhelming Enthusiasm

MPI’s Open Day received overwhelming participation by secondary school students and social elites

The Macao Polytechnic Institute 2020 Open Day has been successfully held just today (December 5), attracting over 2,000 secondary school students, their parents and other individuals from the general public. Through the Open Day, the public from different sectors could get to know more about MPI’s teaching strengths and research development and to experience MPI’s unique campus life characterized by student-centered teaching and quality-oriented management philosophy.

The Macao Polytechnic Institute Open Day and Scholarship Awards Ceremony was kicked off at 2:30pm at the MPI Multisport Pavilion. The opening ceremony was officiated by Prof. Marcus Im Sio Kei, President of MPI; Mr. Li Yongxian, Director of Department of Education and Youth Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao Special Administrative Region; Mr. Sam Hio Tong, Head of Division of Resources and Student Welfare from the Higher Education Bureau; supervisors, principals and heads of 20 secondary schools in Macao; Ng Ka Kei, President of MPI’s Student Union; and Wong U Kei, Chairman of the Board of Directors of MPI Alumni Association. Other distinguished guests in attendance also included representatives from the Macao SAR government departments, scholarship funding organizations, representatives from the educational sector, alumni of MPI, and other social elites. At the ceremony, scholarship funding organizations presented scholarships to 600 outstanding students to recognize and encourage their performance and diligence while studying at MPI.

In his speech, Prof. Im Sio Kei stated that during the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Macao Polytechnic Institute has actively cooperated with the SAR government to cope with the epidemic situation, while ensuring the standard quality of teaching and learning and implementing student-centered teaching and quality-based management philosophy. As a tertiary institute founded and based in Macao, MPI strives to launch academic programs catering to Macao’s changing needs. MPI has established a comprehensive talent cultivation system encompassing Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral programmes that are popular among aspiring young people in Macao. Most of these academic programmes have now obtained program reviews and professional certifications by internationally authoritative accreditation agencies. MPI has long been committed to quality teaching, training more than 20,000 graduates who are now contributing their high-caliber and diverse talents for Macao and the motherland.

Prof. Im Sio Kei also stressed that Macao Polytechnic Institute has adhered to the management principle of attaching equal importance to both teaching and research. Last year, it established the first engineering research center of the Ministry of Education in the Hong Kong and Macao regions. MPI has attained remarkable achievements in the multiple disciplines of artificial intelligence, machine translation and smart city, helping Macao in joining the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to construct international innovative technology centers. The MPI president also acknowledged gratitude to all the different sectors in Macao for their enduring support to MPI, expressing his sincere hope that the general public could learn more about the distinctive features of MPI’s quality teaching through the Open Day. Towards the end of his speech, Prof. Im called on high school graduates from at home and abroad, as well as any other aspiring young people, to apply and enroll in MPI’s academic programmes.

During the Open Day, a rich variety of interactive activities were prepared for students, parents and the public. Highlights of some events included Carefree MPI Campus Walks, programme and courses orientation presentations, alumni sharing sessions, information technology innovation experience, performance, creative arts workshops, student work displays, simultaneous interpretation demonstrations, hands-on workshop, nursing clinical skills, experiment demonstrations, physical fitness tests, and Q&A fun games. Participating students and parents have indicated that they have enjoyed the miscellaneous activities of the Open Day, and were impressed by MPI’s dynamic learning environment and its pursuit of innovative spirit. They also added that the Open Day activities have not just allowed them to learn more about MPI’s remarkable achievements in teaching, and its cutting-edge research endeavors, but also to experience MPI’s stimulating campus life first-hand.

Macao Polytechnic Institutes offers academic degree programmes that span across seven core disciplines of business and management, information technology, languages and translation, arts, sports, health sciences, and public management. The Bachelor’s degree programmes on offer for the 2021/2022 academic year include Sino-Lusophone Trade Relations, Accounting, Management, Marketing, E-Commerce, Gaming and Recreation Management, Computing, Chinese-Portuguese Translation and Interpretation, Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation, International Chinese Language Education, Portuguese Language, Design, Visual Arts, Music, Physical Education, Medical Laboratory Technology, Pharmacy Technology, Nursing, Public Administration, and Social Work. The deadline for application for Bachelor’s programmes is January 20, 2021. Master’s and Doctoral degree courses include Business Administration, Computer Applied Technology, Big Data and Internet of Things, Portuguese Studies, Chinese-Portuguese Translation and Interpreting, Interdisciplinary Arts, Sports and Physical Education, Nursing and Public Policy.
