Joaquim Ramos de Carvalho appointed as the Director of the International Portuguese Training Centre of Macao Polytechnic Institute
In order to strengthen international cooperation and Portuguese language training of Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), Joaquim Ramos de Carvalho has been appointed as the Director of the International Portuguese Training Centre (IPTC). Joaquim Ramos de Carvalho is a well known scholar; he served as the Vice-Rector of University of Coimbra in Portugal from 2011 to 2019. He has rich experience in teaching, research, and international exchange and cooperation. The International Portuguese Training Centre of MPI aims to contribute to the global vision of Macao as a Service Platform between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries, by providing a range of training opportunities and cooperation activities, answering the increasing local, European Union and international interest in the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and its global implications.
MPI welcomes Joaquim Ramos de Carvalho as a new member of the MPI family. His leadership experience in promoting education cooperation between China and Europe and Portuguese-speaking countries is well-recognized. It will bring new impetus to the Portuguese language training and cooperation between Macao Polytechnic Institute, the European Union and the Greater Bay Area, and further enhance MPI's international academic status.
Joaquim Ramos de Carvalho expressed great joy to be working at MPI, an institution known for its continued high level commitment to the development of the relations between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries, hoping to contribute to the development of MPI’s vision and strategy for the future cooperation between China and the European Union and between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.
Joaquim Ramos de Carvalho was the Vice-Rector of University of Coimbra in Portugal from 2011 to 2019, where he was responsible for the development of relations with China, Europe and the Portuguese-speaking countries. During his term, the University of Coimbra created the Sino-Lusophone Academy, the Centre of Chinese Studies in Cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Confucius Institute specializing in Traditional Chinese Medicine. He was also responsible for the development of special programmes for international students from Portuguese-speaking countries, placing the University of Coimbra as the top Portuguese Higher Education Institution in International Student population, according to QS World Rankings (#252 world wide). He was a member of the Executive Board of the Coimbra Group, an association of long-established European multidisciplinary universities of high international standard, contributing to activities related to Latin America, Heritage and Development and Cooperation.
