Thematic forum on “Machine Translation, Artificial Intelligence and Smart Cities in the Big Data Era” to be held by Macao Polytechnic Institute is open for registration

In order to better explore cutting-edge technology, discuss the latest scientific research achievements in the field of machine translation, artificial intelligence and smart cities, train and bring together innovative talents, serve the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the overall situation of national construction and development, and continuously assist and enhance China and the “Belt and Road” countries with science and technology innovation cooperation, the Macao Polytechnic Institute and three support units, the Language Big Data Alliance, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and Hong Kong University School of Professional and Continuing Education, will hold the thematic forum on “Machine Translation, Artificial Intelligence and Smart Cities in the Big Data Era” in the morning of 16th July 2020. The forum will be conducted online through the ZOOM online platform. Translators from government agencies and departments, practitioners and researchers from the fields of big data and artificial intelligence, as well as other interested parties, are all welcome to participate.

In recent years, with the continuous maturation of artificial intelligence technology, neural machine translation technology has quietly emerged. Based on deep learning, it simulates the human brain nervous system, which has greatly improved the effectiveness and accuracy of machine translation. Macao Polytechnic Institute has taken this opportunity to establish the “Chinese-Portuguese-English Machine Translation Laboratory” jointly with Global Tone Communication Technology Co., Ltd. and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. With the development direction of data, technology and applications, it has adopted machine translation, cross-lingual big data, think tank, speech recognition, semantic search, etc., and other advanced technologies to develop the Chinese-Portuguese neural machine translation system with independent intellectual property rights and Chinese-Portuguese-English simultaneous interpretation system with speech recognition that are now widely used in the Greater Bay Area, Portuguese-speaking countries and the "Belt and Road" countries with unanimous praise.

The National “13th Five-Year Plan” pointed out that the implementation of the national big data strategy, by using big data as a basic strategic resource, fully advances the promotion of big data development, accelerates the promotion of data resource sharing and opening up as well as development and application, and assists industrial transformation and upgrading and society governance innovation. In this context, the Macao Polytechnic Institute successfully obtained the approval of the Ministry of Education in 2019, and established the first “Engineering Research Centre of Applied Technology on Machine Translation and Artificial Intelligence, Ministry of Education” in Hong Kong and Macao, focusing on building a large “Belt and Road” language database, to provide prerequisites and guarantees for the construction of language intercommunication in the “Belt and Road”. At the same time, through the implementation of interdisciplinary research, the Engineering Research Centre aims to achieve scientific and technological innovation and key technological breakthroughs, and assist in constructing the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area as an international technology innovation centre.

Smart cities are an important development direction of current urban governance. Through various information technologies such as the Internet of Things, cloud computing and big data, etc., the efficiency of resource utilization is improved, city management and services are optimized, and the quality of life of citizens is improved. The thematic forum on “Machine Translation, Artificial Intelligence and Smart Cities in the Big Data Era” will invite a number of experts and scholars from Beijing, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao to give speeches and share the latest scientific research results in the field of machine translation, artificial intelligence and smart city construction; to promote the cooperation between Beijing, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao in the forefront of science and technology and the construction of the Smart Bay Area, further promote the integration of Macao into the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the overall development of the country, and assist the construction and development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the “Belt and Road”.

The thematic forum on “Machine Translation, Artificial Intelligence and Smart Cities in the Big Data Era” is open for registration from now until 13th July; as the quota is limited, please sign up as soon as possible.
