Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and the MPI Student Union jointly held the freshmen orientation on August 21. With the theme “Shine with MPI”, the orientation aimed to help students adjust to college life and adapt to the learning environment. Students were encouraged to inherit the spirit of MPI, which is being optimistic, brave, and united, to start a bright new chapter of their life.

The orientation this year welcomed nearly 1000 undergraduate and postgraduate freshmen from Macao, the Greater Bay Area, Portuguese-speaking countries and other areas. It opened with a lion dance performance, followed by various performances including rope skipping, freestyle soccer, Chinese dance, traditional song and dance of Portuguese-speaking countries, street dance, drama about college life, etc. Apart from those, students also interacted in the orientation to share their learning expectations.

Student Liu, who is majoring in Chinese-Portuguese Translation and Interpretation, said he would try his best to enrich his four-year college life experience by actively participating in extracurricular activities, making good use of his spare time to develop well-rounded skills and exploring his potential. While student Cheang, majoring in management, shared his learning expectations; he hoped he could improve his foreign language skills, broaden international views and experience different cultures by participating in overseas exchange programmes, such as study camp in the United States and Australia, which would also help him to understand the management models and development strategies of international enterprises. Student Chen, majoring in nursing, expressed that he wants to participate in academic exchange not only in Portugal but also in Mainland China. By knowing the history, education, economy, and development of the motherland, he could better prepare himself for the opportunities and challenges arising from the establishment of “The Belt and Road” initiatives and the Greater Bay Area.

MPI has been practicing its school ideology of “remaining rooted in Macao with love for our country and the local society, and serving the local society with an eye to the world” and cultivating talents with professionalism and innovative spirit. To help develop students’ world vision, values, view of life, self-control, team spirit and communication, as well as to facilitate freshmen’s adaptation to college life and create a good campus environment and learning atmosphere, MPI will organise a series of orientation activities including adventure camps, sharing session by outstanding MPI students, entrepreneur sharing and visit, and career planning lectures. It aims to lay the foundation for the all-rounded development of students and for their future service to the society.
