Renowned Singer Shen Yang to host ‘Vocal Masterclass’ at MPI

To promote professional education of college students and to align with the development of the cultural and creative industries of Macao, MPI’s music programme has invited Shen Yang, world-renowned singer and the youngest Chinese to make a debut at the Metropolitan Opera in the United States, to host a ‘Vocal Masterclass’ at the Institute on 14th September (Wednesday). This will be a rare opportunity to hear from Shen as he gives a talk and demonstration on his superb singing skills. MPI welcomes teachers and students from higher education institutions, members from the arts community and the general public to attend this event.

Born in Tianjin, China, world-renowned bass-baritone Shen Yang is an alumnus of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, The Juilliard School, and the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. He has now been signed with the Metropolitan Opera in New York and also with IMG Artists, a major international performing arts agency. Shen is an Invited Professor of the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, Tianjin Conservatory of Music, Shenyang Conservatory of Music, Wuhan Conservatory of Music and Zhejiang Conservatory of Music. Shen now teaches at the Department of Opera of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music as a Distinguished Professor.

As the youngest contestant of the 2007 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, Shen Yang won the first prize in this prestigious singing contest. His debut at the Metropolitan Opera in the United States in 2009 made him the youngest Chinese to be invited to perform at this coveted venue. Currently Shen plays an active part as a performer on opera and musical stages around the world, and has given solo concerts on a regular basis.

MPI’s music programme, which organises this event, says that the ‘Vocal Masterclass by Shen Yang’ is the first in a series of academic and art events to be offered in the 2016/2017 academic year. MPI hopes that through joining this event, college students will have their sense of music enhanced while being exposed to the international art arena. The event will also advance the development of Macao’s cultural and creative industries. The Masterclass, which is open for free to the public, will be held from 3-6pm on 14th September (Wednesday) at Room M409 on the fourth floor of MPI’s Meng Tak Building.  MPI welcomes the public to join in and hear from Professor Shen on his expertise.
