“2016 Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition” Successfully Held in MPI

The “2016 Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition”, jointly organised by Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and Macao Computer Society, was successfully completed in MPI on 5th July. Over 50 teams from 13 cities and regions within the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region, including Guangdong, Jiangxi, Fujian, Hunan, Hainan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing, Guangxi, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao; and more than 20,000 students participated in the competition. Among all, Macao Polytechnic Institute, South China University of Technology, Southwest Forestry University, Xiamen University of Technology and Hainan University received the Gold Award.

The grand final was held at MPI and the competition went very smoothly. Students and teachers from the different regions benefited greatly from this competition as it helps to promote a mutual exchange of knowledge. Each team displayed their IT projects and shared their experiences with the public between 4th - 5th July at MPI Multisport Pavilion, the showcase attracting many secondary school teachers and students from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao to visit and exchange ideas.

The competition award ceremony was held in the MPI Auditorium. The guests attending the ceremony were Mr. He Zhen, Deputy Chairman of the Guangdong Provincial Association for Science and Technology, Mr. Tong Chi Kin, Founding President of the Macao Computer Society, Mr. Cheang Kun Wai, committee member of the Science and Technology Development Fund, Mr. Chang Kun Hong, Deputy Director, Tertiary Education Services Office, Ms. Wong Kam Ian, Chief Curator of the Communications Museum, Macao, Mr. Hoi Io Meng, Department Head, Macao Government Tourism Office, Ms. Iao Cheng, Acting Head of the Training Centre for Civil Service, Public Administration and Civil Service Bureau, Mr. Lou San, Division Head, Bureau of Telecommunications Regulation, Ms. Lai Iok In, Division Head, Organisation and Information, Education and Youth Affairs Bureau, Ms. Leong I Lam, representative of Bank of China, Macao Branch, Ms. Betty Zhao, Chief Operating Officer, Paradise Entertainment Ltd, Mr. Thomas Mak, Manager, The Macau Productivity and Technology Transfer Centre, Mr. Qian Chun, Minister of the Guangdong Provincial Association for Science and Technology, Mr. Hu Mian, Vice Researcher of the Guangdong Provincial Association for Science and Technology, Mr. Han Guoqiang, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Computer Academy of Guangdong, Mr. Chan Weng Kin, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Macao Computer Society, Mr. Iao Seng Tong, President of Macao Computer Society, Professor Lei Heong Iok, President of MPI and Professor Im Sio Kei, Vice President of MPI.

During the competition, the students' outstanding performances and their IT projects received not only a high degree of recognition and praise from the judges but also an enthusiastic reception from the audience. During the last stage of the work defenses on the morning of 5th July, the best 16 teams greatly impressed the judges.

The President of MPI Professor Lei Heong Iok stated in his speech at the award ceremony that the Competition has already been organised for 11 years. The IT projects each year showed that the education and quality of information technology keeps improving. The IT projects are full of creativity and the design coordinates with the needs of the society and daily life. Professor Lei believes that the contestants will continue to contribute to the society in the future. MPI hopes that through this competition, students can develop the skill of information technology, stimulate their creative potential and foster their team spirit. The overall quality of the IT Projects in the grand final is very high and the competition is very keen. By showcasing many high-quality IT projects, the Competition plays a very positive role in cultivating IT talents as well as in promoting exchanges of experiences and ideas between students and young people in the Region. In addition, it is an honour for MPI to continue hosting this competition, representing the high recognition and appreciation from the community. Some mainland students highly recommended the software and hardware facilities of MPI and they appreciated the MPI campus atmosphere. MPI would like to organise different types of competitions in the future to broaden the horizons of Macao’s students, increase exchange opportunities and enhance regional awareness of MPI.

Mr. Chan Weng Kin, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Macao Computer Society said in his speech that 'Smart City' is a global development trend which involves massive data applications. Mr. Chan encouraged students to have the ability to handle data management which includes legislation, governance, supervision, security, etc. As professional IT specialists, we need to keep pace with the times, equip ourselves to handle information technology and also seize the opportunity to learn more interdisciplinary knowledge with an open mind. The Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition provides a good platform to let college students show their creativity and by comparing and assessing the IT projects to achieve mutual exchanges purposes.
