Joint Solo Exhibition in New York by MPI Professors: Hsu Hsiu Chu & Chen Chiu Jhin

Rooted in Macao and facing the world Dr. Hsu Hsiu Chu and Professor Chen Chiu Jhin, Director and Professor of the School of Arts, Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) respectively, held a joint solo exhibition in the Gallery of Amerasia Bank, New York from June 19th to 30th.. The exhibition was officially opened after a press conference at 2pm on June 19th, New York time, followed by an opening ceremony at 5pm. Many art lovers and artists attended the exhibition, and apart from rating the exhibits highly they also strongly supported the MPI professors being invited to exhibit in New York.

Hsu Hsiu Chu’s exhibit begins with colour and the composition of rose and dragon horses, bringing out the connections of the meaning of life symbolised in the theme of the pursuit of a deep meaning presented in visual arts, as well as exploration of the realm of “Absolute Perfection”. The visual shapes of “rose” and “dragon horse” are presented in the painting, and when gazing toward the exhibit, a feeling somewhere between explicability and inexplicability and the envisioning of man’s senses and sensibilities can be evoked.

Professor Chen Chiu Jhin’s recent works are themed on food, which is a metaphor of her feelings of life. Two collections are on this theme: “Desserts series” and “Fruits series”. The former combines presentations of desserts with human wants to produce a visualisation of emotions and ambiguity while the latter magnifies fruits to such an extent that their shapes and textures are different from what they really are. Embedding the double concept of seeing a world in a grain of sand and food as a view, the paintings are as realisers of life’s detachment.

Both professors are holders of doctoral degreesfrom the USA, , Hsu Hsiu Chu earning her degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign while Chen Chiu Jhin obtained hers from Pennsylvania State University. Both professors currently teach at MPI. Not only do they work in the field of tertiary education and research, but also, as art lovers, they dedicate their time to proactive creation. The exhibits were all produced by them in MPI between 2014 and 2015.
