Summary:
This paper presents a technique to solve the overloading conditions of HTTP proxy servers. It is achieved by eliminating the unnecessary requests reaching the proxy servers. These unnecessary requests are the miss requests which cause the proxy to store copies of requested objects, but the copies will not be accessed again. To identify this kind of requests, we construct a list, called hot-site list, to store the most popularity web sites. For those requests not on the list will be directly forwarded to the remote Web sites without passing through the proxies. Our analytical and simulation results show that our proposed technique can reduce the proxy load by 48% and give a 1.75 system throughput gain.
