Programme outline 課程簡介
The Bachelor of Arts in Music is a four-year full-time degree program. It is the first and only tertiary music course in Macau at present. All subjects are conducted in Chinese, with a few in English. Students may choose either "Music Education" or "Music Performance" as their major. The curriculum is committed to nurturing students’ ability of music performance, music teaching and research studies with high moral integrity and critical thinking.
Programme objectives 課程目標

The School of Arts at Macao Polytechnic Institute aims to establish a distinctive music programme, not only answering the needs of the society, but to pursue an international standard and to present a unique quality of Macao.

The objectives of the Programme are:
1. To deepen students' understanding of the functions, concepts, structures and values of music.
2. To train students to think independently and to work creatively and intelligently towards their own music field of interest.

What will you be expected to achieve? 期望達到的成效
All the staff members are committed to help the students to reach a high level of musical and intellectual standard through their studies. Students who graduate from the course will be able to apply their ability and intelligence on their teaching and performing career. The course provides the students not only to teach or to perform instruments, but also to achieve positions that related to musical and cultural areas, such as arts management, arts administrative or even work as a full time and part time composer.

How will you be assessed? 如何評核
Teachers set the assessment criteria in accordance with the characteristics of each subject and the guidelines provided by the School. Theoretical subjects are assessed by written examinations and reports while assessment for the practical subjects requires students to perform in their final examination. Results will be sent to the examination board for discussion, and then to the external examiner for approval. Instrumental/vocal external examiners will also participate in the examination of all instrumental/vocal examination and graduation thesis.

What are the entry requirements? 入學條件

Secondary School Graduates(Form 6)
According to Article 28 of the Higher Education Law of Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR), article nº3, applicants being Grade 12 graduate or equivalent and upon successful completion of the entrance examination will be eligible to further his/her studies in a Bachelor degree programme offered by MPI.
According to article 28 of the Higher Education Law of MSAR, article nº9, applicants of age 25 or above and with special ability conditions need not comply with the above mentioned point. Upon successful completion of the entrance examination, the applicant will be eligible to further his/her studies in a Bachelor degree programme offered by MPI. Thus, those who reach the age of 25 before September 1st will also be eligible to participate in the entrance examination.


Have passed the medical examination.

Note: According to article 4 of Decree-Law 26/2003, the participants who have completed their secondary studies outside of Macao, need the recognition of the Committee for Recognition of Degrees, Diplomas, Curricula and Disciplines and Academic Equivalence before they are eligible to register.

How do we listen and act on your feedback? 如何聽取及回應學生的回饋
1. Staff‐Student Dialogue Session (institutional level, school level, programme level) in which responses are given to the questions and feedback from students; the programme will also follow up the related issues.
2. Every student will assign a full time teacher as a mentor who will assist the student throughout his/her study year.
3. Two student representatives from each class are responsible in facilitating the communication and coordination between the students and teachers.
Academic support 教學支援
There are 6 tutorial hours for every teacher, and the schedule is posted on the door of the staff rooms so that students can meet with their teachers during those hours. Besides the 6 tutorial hours, all teachers have their email and contact number listed in their teaching plan and students can call teachers anytime when they have questions. In the beginning of the academic year, we hold an opening ceremony with all new students and to give them a briefing of what they're going to learn throughout their 4 years of study so that they can be well prepared. And there's a mentor for each student and the mentor is responsible for student's academic need.

Every new student will get one handbook of music programme, which includes all specific rules and guidelines of examination of the Course.
Support for disabled students 殘疾學生支援
Macao Polytechnic Institute has in place an institution‐wide policy to ensure that all student needs are taken care of and a supportive and accessible learning environment is maintained. When cases of special needs are notified or identified, special arrangements are made on a case‐by‐case basis with the joint effort of the programme and several student support services of the Institute, such as the Registry, the Student Affairs Office, the Computer Services Centre, etc. to provide the necessary support.

With the diversity of curriculum planning, well-developed teaching facilities, inspiring academic seminars, master classes, and solid teaching staffs from various musical professional background, the Music Program has become a popular choice for music students.

The programme has a close relationship with the primary and secondary schools, music association, art organisations and government department, which provide opportunities of practicum and teaching internship to our students. Considerate number of graduates has become music teachers, applying and utilising what they have learnt. There is also a considerate number of them setting up personal studios and offering private lessons, with some others continue their study aboard or jobs in other different music field.
