Programme outline 課程簡介

The Chinese‐English Translation Programme offers both an evening and daytime mode of study, maintaining a ratio of 2 daytime classes to 1 evening class per year. Since both nighttime and daytime study modes are full‐time, with the same number of class hours, they follow the same curriculum and syllabi, course content, materials, mode of presentation and assessment. The learning process for both types of courses is closely monitored to make sure that they are maintained at the same level.

The programme aims to

1) develop students' English and Chinese communication skills, which they will need to serve as effective and responsible intermediaries between the two languages;

2) enhance students' awareness of their prospective roles as language specialists in government, business and the professions in Macao's multilingual community.

What will you be expected to achieve? 期望達到的成效
The programme aims to lay a progressive pathway for students in three branches: engagement of language related job, translation-related job and postgraduate studies. The followings are expected to be achieved:
1. Effectively apply translation skills and techniques to real practice.
2. Effectively apply interpreting (CI and SI) skills and techniques to real practice.
3. Effectively apply English and Chinese language skills to real practice.
4. Be equipped with adequate written, oral communicative and interpersonal abilities.
5. Be equipped with adequate English and Chinese writing abilities.
6. Build the awareness of professionalism and teamwork.
7. Work independently to do translation or CI/SI.
8. Acquire essential knowledge in English language, literature, history, etc.
9. Acquire general knowledge in Chinese language, Chinese literature, law, etc.
10. Acquire essential knowledge and abilities to operate computers.
11. Acquire essential abilities to do academic researches.
12. Build the capacity and desire to learn new or higher level subjects.
13. Build the capacity and desire for lifelong learning.

How will you learn? 如何學習
Learning method can be varied according to the nature of the course, that is, whether the course is language-based, theoretical-based or research-based. Generally, it takes place in the form of lecture for knowledge applicable courses, pair or group discussion and class practice for translation courses, self-practice or class practice or workshop for languages courses, practice or oral presentation and field practice for interpreting courses. Classes can be held in classroom, language laboratory, computer room, meeting room for conference interpreting and lecture theatre with simultaneous interpreting booths.
How will you be assessed? 如何評核
The format of assessment tasks vary according to the targeted learning outcomes. The tasks can be in the format of written, presentation or recording. The level of assessments will be varied from elementary, intermediate to advanced level depending on the objects and level of the course and the respective learning outcomes. The degree of difficulty will be increased with the increase level of assessment. In general, students can be assessed through assignments, quizzes and tests, with final examination at the end of semester.

The programme is structured on a combined range of three major areas: language enhancement; theories and practice, and research on translation. The four years' curriculum lays a progressive pathway for these three areas and the overall layout is listed below.

What are the entry requirements? 入學條件
1. Secondary School Graduates(Form 6), or According to article 28 of the Higher Education Law of RAEM, article nº9, applicants of age 25 or above and with special ability conditions, need not comply with the above mentioned point 1. Upon successful completion of the entrance examination, the applicant will be eligible to further his/her studies in a higher diploma programme offered by MPI. All those who complete 25 years of age before September 1st will also be eligible to participate in the entrance examination. (Note: According to article 4 of Decree‐Law 26/2003, the participants who have completed their secondary studies out of Macao, need the recognition of MPI’s Academic Qualification Recognition Committee before they are eligible to register.)

How do we listen and act on your feedback? 如何聽取及回應學生的回饋
1) Staff‐Student Dialogue Sessions (institutional level) in which responses are given to the questions from the students, and the programme will follow up the related issues.
2) A student tutoring system is set up to listen and help students of each school year;
3) Weekly office hours are available for consultation and advice;
4) School level and programme level dialogs are/and will be held each semester. Information and opinions from these sources will be channelled back to the School Director and/or Coordinator for meetings to discuss possible solutions and improvements.
Academic Support 教學支援
Renowned scholars are invited each semester to give seminars to our faculty and students. Tutorials and extracurricular activities, such as training in English debate or speech presentation, and English Salon, etc., are provided to enhance the langauge abilities of students. Year tutor is assigned to each class to ensure close communications have been kept between students and teachers for the assurance of teaching and learning qualities.

The programme offers daytime and nighttime classes in parallel mode, students of the two classes are free to choose which class they attend according to his/her schedule.
Support for disabled students 殘疾學生支援
Macao Polytechnic Institute has in place an institution ‐ wide policy to ensure that all student needs are taken care of and a supportive and accessible learning environment is maintained. When cases of special needs are notified or identified, special arrangements are made on a case‐by‐case basis with the joint effort of the programme and several student support services departments of the Institute, such as the Registry, the Student Affairs Office, the Computer Services Centre, etc. to provide the necessary support.
Links With Employers, Internship Opportunities and Transferable Skills 與僱主關係、實習機會及可轉移技能
Close contact has been kept with external advisory group through meetings each year. The members of the advisory group represent the employers of different sectors including media, business and education. Students are given opportunities to carry out interpreting tasks for important local events such as annual Macao International Fair (MIF) and Macao International Environmental Cooperation Forum (MIECF), as well as seminars series organized by the Tertiary Education Services Office and conferences of other private enterprises.
