MPI International Students Integrate into Macao Communities

During the summer vacation, the Student Affairs Office of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) organized a series of summer activities for international students. These activities play a positive role in integrating the international students into community service, enriching their study life, enhancing the tertiary students’ concern for the society and helping the students to achieve an all-round development.

MPI organized nearly 30 international students to visit Hengqin to see the development of the Greater Bay Area. The students were warmly received by the Macao Affairs Bureau of the Zhuhai Hengqin New Area Administrative Committee. They visited the Hengqin Planning Exhibition Hall, the Hengqin Urban Utility Tunnel, the Guangdong–Macau Traditional Chinese Medicine Technology Industrial Park and other facilities. The international students experienced the rapid growth of a boomtown in the Greater Bay Area, and were amazed at the strength of China's development, thus becoming more confident and hopeful about their future employment prospects.

The students then went to the Macau Association of the Hearing Impaired to communicate with the hearing impaired people by learning some basic phrases of sign language, such as “morning”, “good afternoon”, “my name” and “thank you”, through interactive games. The students said it was very meaningful to be able to participate in community activities. They felt the kindness of hearing impaired people, and would like to learn more sign language expressions and thus to have deeper communication with them in the future.

On another occasion, MPI international students were organized to experience the fun of dragon boat rowing. The coaches from the Dragon Boat Association of Macao and the MPI Alumni Association first lectured on the origin and the roles of a dragon boat team, which was an eye-opener for the students. After the training, they could not wait to put on their lifejackets and lift their oars. The students went from not being able to coordinate their movements to successfully rowing around the lake following the tempo, and then realized the importance of the spirit of coordination and teamwork.

Shortly afterwards, the international students were brought to visit the Macao Museum for Treasure from the Deep Sea –– Exhibition of Underwater Archaeological Relics of the Nanhai No. 1. They gained a strong sense of the long history of China and Macao as a point of cultural convergence between the East and the West when they were introduced to the history of China’s Maritime Silk Road and showed a rare exhibition of large-scale underwater archaeological artifacts and the museum's other precious collections.

According to the Student Affairs Office of MPI, the aim of organizing the above activities is to enable students to make the best use of their leisure time to gain new experience, to strengthen their understanding of China and Macao, to integrate into Macao society during their four-year university life, to look forward to the future with a broader mind, to contribute to the development of the community, and to make full use of their strengths in the diversified planning and development of the Greater Bay Area.
