Macao Polytechnic Institute - Careers Day 2017

Macao Polytechnic Institute (“MPI” or the “Institute”) held a series of activities for its “Careers Day 2017” with the theme “Passionate Dreams Pave the Way for Future Achievements”. More than 1,200 registrations from students and prospective graduates were recorded in response to more than 1,500 job vacancies offered by 39 participating companies and organisations. Endorsed by society and hiring firms, and with their quality and overall performance positively acknowledged, MPI’s graduates could find employment, on average, within slightly more than one month after graduation, and their average salary had risen by five percents

The opening ceremony of MPI’s “Careers Day 2017” took place at 11:00am on 13 February 2017 in front of the MPI auditorium on its main campus in NAPE, with the representatives from the 39 participating companies and organisations as officiating guests. MPI’s Vice-President Im Sio Kei, Marcus, said in his ceremony speech that the career development of students is a top priority of the Institute and MPI has consistently been the most popular choice among local secondary students. According to MPI’s “Graduate Survey Report in the Academic Year 2015/2016”, its graduates could secure employment, on average, within slightly more than one month after graduation, receiving an average salary of MOP$17,560, which represented a five percent increase as compared to the same figure from last academic year; almost 80% of its graduates took up employment in the fields of their study; 90% of its graduates agreed that what they had learned at MPI was useful to their jobs. Moreover, the most popular four industries in which its graduates entered were (1) medical and health care and social services, (2) public administration, (3) tourism, hospitality and catering, and (4) education. Nearly 80% of its graduates joined the workforce while around 10% chose to further study. Their first three destinations for further study were, in descending order, Macau, Australia and England.

At the crowded venue of MPI’s “Careers Day 2017”, Mr. Chan, a senior studying Science in Computing, said that he was very optimistic about his career prospect. Both public and private organisations have a huge demand for information technology specialists, and the academic subjects which he has been studying at MPI, including enterprise information systems, gaming technology, and computer education, would prove particularly useful in securing a job in this field. Moreover, Ms. Lam, a sophomore reading Sino-Lusophone Trade Relations, indicated that she would like to work for companies engaging in international trade and doing business with Portuguese-speaking countries, and that the activities today had given her a good grasp of the relevant employment information, allowing her to make career planning well in advance.

A casino senior management representative commended the practicality of the Institute’s degree programmes, which closely relate to the needs of the gaming industry and prepare its graduates to easily adapt to work in the same. As a hiring company’s spokesperson, she thanked MPI for its dedication to nurturing local talents. Another representative from a participating company in the banking and finance industry said that he has already recruited a number of MPI graduates, and that their overall performance has been very good. So, he expects to hire more this year.

The MPI Student Affairs Office, which is responsible for organising the “Careers Day 2017”, said that there are a series of career-related activities spanning more than one week, including career promotion and fair, career talks, online job posting, and site visits to enterprises. The 39 participating companies and organisations include governmental departments, banks and financial institutions, hotels and casinos, caterers and retailers, information technology service providers, human resource agencies, real estate agencies, comprehensive social enterprises, mass media companies, and sports companies. There are altogether 13 career talks, with new topics on the Sino-Lusophone trade relations and human resources, the broadcasting electronic technology, the industry prospect for cloud computing, and the youth entrepreneurship.
