| Mestrado em Telecomunicações |
Objectivos
|
| a) |
Networks Pathway |
| |
The Networks pathway focuses upon the actual infrastructure and operation of different telecoms systems (i.e. bottom layers of the protocol stack), both wired and wireless. In addition, the programme includes performance evaluation issues related to modern telecoms networks. Graduates will develop clear concepts concerning how existing and future systems work and how to optimise their performance. This pathway is therefore aimed at those who wish to continue their careers as network engineers, designing future networks and developing standards. |
| b) |
Internet Computing Pathway |
| |
The Internet Computing pathway can be seen as a combination of Networks and Applications pathways, covering major topics form the whole protocol stack. This pathway will be ideal for those who wish to learn about “hot topics” in the whole telecoms sector without looking in great detail at specific areas, or for those who wish to update their telecoms knowledge. |
| c) |
Applications Pathway |
| |
The Applications pathway focuses upon the development of applications in modern telecoms networks (i.e. the top layers of the protocol stack), and hence there is a substantial amount of high-level object oriented programming involved, together with other technical issues related to the development of e-commerce applications, including areas such as security, complex database structures and management and the use of artificial intelligence. The target group for this pathway is those who wish to continue their careers as e-commerce application developers, creating applications for such systems as online banking systems as well as applications for mobile devices (e.g. mobile phones, PDAs, iPods). |

Students are required to have passed 6 out of the 8 taught modules before they are allowed to proceed to projects. |
Modes of Study
The above programme will normally be studied part-time through distance learning and will take a minimum of 2 years to complete. The distance learning approach comprises recorded lectures made available over the Internet with web-based study materials. Students studying in this way will need to have access to a PC with broadband Internet connection. The approach is designed to provide a virtual environment in which you can have, as nearly as possible, the same learning experience as students attending Queen Mary in London. The components of this approach are: virtual lectures, supporting materials, virtual laboratories, message-boards, tutorial support, coursework, project work and examinations. |
Requirements for Award
To pass the MSc, the student will need to:
| gain a pass mark (50%) in at least 6 (out of 8) taught subjects, and |
| gain a mark of at least 30% in any taught subjects the student does not pass, and |
| gain a pass mark for the project. |
On successful completion of the programme and compliance with all other relevant requirements, the candidate will be awarded an MSc from the University of London.

Entry Requirements
Applicants should have a first or upper-second class degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related discipline. Applicants with unrelated degrees will be considered if there is evidence of significant relevant industrial experience. Applicants with lower-second class degrees may be considered if the undergraduate degree specialised in relevant subject areas.
In addition to the above general entry requirements applicants should have basic skills in programming languages, ideally, an object-oriented language.
Before being enrolled, students will also be required to have achieved at least one of the following English language entry requirements:
| IELTS - minimum score of 6.5 |
| TOEFL - minimum score of 580 or IBTOEFL - minimum score of 92 |
| HKCEE English (Syllabus B) - Grade C or above |
| HKALE Use of English - Grade C or above |
|
Fees
| 1. |
Payment is made on a semester by semester basis, i.e. total course cost of GBP9,500. For future years of the course, Queen Mary, University of London reserves the right to adjust annual tuition fees. |
| 2. |
A special discount is available to MPI graduates and members of staff at MPI. |
| 3. |
Accepted applicants are required to complete their registration at MPI. After having registered at MPI, students can use the facilities and services provided by the Institute according to the regulations applied to the students of degree programmes. |
|
