Professor Alex Fung retired in 2013 from the post of Senior Assistant Executive Director of the Vocational Training Council, Hong Kong, holding concurrent posts of Academic Director of Design Discipline in the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education, and Principal of Hong Kong Design Institute. He took a leading role in the departmental restructuring and programme development of the newly set up Design Institute. Prior to joining the Council, he served the School of Design, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University for over 20 years, serving as Associate Head and Associate Professor until the summer of 2007, having joined PolyU in 1985 to teach courses on Design Thinking, Visual Communication Design, Packaging and Branding Design, and Advertising Design within the BA (Hons) in Design degree programme.

Professor Fung has a special research interest in the development and application of creative and strategic thinking methodologies in design and other related disciplines. He has also researched and published in the area of design education development in Hong Kong and Mainland China. He is the co-author of the highly popular book Creative Tools published by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and funded by a Teaching and Learning Research Grant from the Hong Kong SAR Government.

Professor Fung has been appointed Subject Specialist in Design by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications for over 20 years and has taken part in the validation and accreditation exercises of most design programmes. Currently, he is working as a part-time Programme Consultant for the Technological and Higher Education Institute and the newly set up International Culinary Institute of VTC; and still actively engaging in design education development work.
