Tools to Deliver a World-Class Education: A Higher Education Academy Approach
Jing Zhang (UK Higher Education Academy)
Abstract
Five identified components to ensure teaching excellence and subsequently inspire learning are:
  1. Engaging professionally qualified staff in their own continuous professional development
  2. Understanding what students say 'works' with respect to learning gain, and their own educational experiences
  3. Peer-to-peer learning approaches
  4. Strategic leadership for teaching and learning, and a cohesive, focused approach to student success
  5. Continuous curriculum development and enrichment

By examining each of these components, this paper will:

  • equip policy makers, higher education leaders and academics with a deeper understanding of how a professional standards framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education can be implemented to support the development of world-class education
  • examine case studies from the Asia-Pacific region in relation to policy implementation, people management and development as well as best practice solutions
  • outline a range of support tools designed to enhance teaching and inspire excellent teaching to drive student success which have been developed in collaboration with the HE sector by the Higher Education Academy, a UK-based, global, non-profit organization with charitable status that was established in 2003 to promote teaching excellence in higher education. Tools include globally-recognised Fellowship and Accreditation schemes, open-access resources as well as a range of events and services to support individual, institutional and policy development in relation to teaching quality enhancement.
