Prof. Samantha Mei-Che Pang

Professor Samantha Mei-Che PANG, professor of School of Nursing in Hong Kong Polytechnic University, is former Head of the School as well as Director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Community Health Services. Professor Pang holds 11 Visiting and/or Honorary Professorships in tertiary institutions on the Chinese mainland and one in Chiba University, Japan. She is now serving as Chair of the Nursing Council of Hong Kong and also holds several appointments to serve on advisory committees under the Food and Health Bureau and Education Bureau of Hong Kong.

Professor Pang obtained her general nurse registration in Hong Kong in 1977 and state nurse registration at the Nursing Council of England and Wales in 1979. In 1983 she received her first degree in philosophy with Summa cum laude at Pontifical Urbaniana University. Her ten more years of nursing practice at Queen Mary Hospital and Haven of Hope Hospital was primarily in the field of paediatrics and advanced chronic illnesses. She earned her Master of Science degree in Nursing Education with distinction from the University of Edinburgh in 1990, and her doctorate from the University of Hong Kong in 1999. Her thesis entitled “Nursing Ethics in Modern China: Conflicting Values and Competing Role Requirements” was published in the Value Inquiry Book Series 2003.

Professor Pang started her career as a nurse academic in early 1990. Over the past 20 years she has taught, lectured, and published in the areas of nursing ethics, caring practices, and ethics and quality of life concerns in end-of-life care. In 2002 Professor Pang received one of the first Fulbright Hong Kong Scholar Programme awards to study cross-cultural differences in making end-of-life decisions in the US. Professor Pang has more than 100 international publications as well as several books and book chapters. She serves on the editorial boards of Nursing Ethics, Journal of Clinical Nursing, International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being, and Nursing Research.
