Prof. Chan Yuk-chung

Prof. Chan Yuk-chung from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University is the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences and is a Professor of the Department of Applied Social Sciences (Social Work Team).

Professor Chan is a noted expert in child protection, working with domestic violence and delinquency. He obtained his PhD degree in the field of sociology and social work from the University of Nottingham in 1998. Before joining the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1988, Professor Chan had worked as a family service worker, a probation officer, and a child protection worker with the Hong Kong Government.

For the past 20 years, Professor Chan has been teaching social work practice, family violence, and juvenile delinquency in social work programs at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He also supervises MPhil and PhD students. Besides, Professor Chan has been appointed as external examiners by a number of institutions in the field of social work and social sciences. He is also currently assessment panel member of the Hong Kong Social Worker Registration Board.

Professor Chan has been actively engaged in research and consultancy work on families in Hong Kong and Macau for the Hong Kong and Macau SAR Governments. He has consistently published reports for the government to impact on their policies on families, specifically on family violence prevention. Besides, he actively engaged in collaborative research work with the NGOs to provide them with empirical information on the direction of their social service development.

The total amount of funding secured for the consultancy and research projects with Professor Chan’s involvement is more than 11.5 million Hong Kong Dollars, including 5 million from projects with him as a principal investigator, 6.5 million for projects in which he is a co-investigator. Professor Chan authored and co-authored more than 10 consultancy research reports, over 50 articles/book chapters, and 7 books.
