MPI Students and Alumni Triumph at Incheon Asian Games

The students and alumni of Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) who have just competed at the 17th Asian Games currently held in Incheon, South Korea returned to Macao on 25 September 2014 with their medals and outstanding accomplishments. An MPI delegation led by Vice President Professor Yin Lei received them at the airport and extended their heartfelt congratulations on their brilliant performances, filling the airport lobby with joy and tears.

The Asian Games, organised on a quadrennial basis, are the largest sports event in Asia. Up until 25 September 2014, from the sports field in Incheon came the heartening news of the following. Jia Rui, an MPI alumnus, brought home Macao’s first silver medal in the men’s Changquan final. Li Yi and Huang Junhua, students of MPI, respectively won the silver medals in the women’s Jianshu/Qiangshu all-round and the men’s Nanquan/Nangun all-round (martial arts events). Wu Nok In and Tan Dongmei, students of MPI, finished in fourth place and ninth place in the men’s Daoshu/Gunshu all-round and the women’s Nandao/Nanquan all-round (martial arts events) while their alumna Hoi Long finished in fifth place in the women’s triathlon. Ivy Lei On Kei, an MPI alumna, finished in eighth place in the women’s 50m breaststroke and broke the Macao record in freestyle relay. On behalf of all MPI students and faculty, Vice President Professor Yin Lei welcomed their return and commended their hard work and brilliant performances, bringing MPI and Macao joy and glory. The Incheon Asian Games will last until 4 October. More MPI students and alumni will compete in the coming few days. More uplifting news is anticipated.

The delegation receiving the MPI athletes at the airport also included Professors Yang Zaihuai and Meng Wendi, Director and Programme Coordinator of the School of Physical Education and Sports, Mr Chan Heng U, President of the Student Union, heads of MPI administrative units and students.
