“Focus on studies and learn to share” MPI hosts its Opening Ceremony for Academic Year 2014-2015

On 22 August, The Macao Polytechnic Institute hosted its Opening Ceremony for Academic Year 2014-2015 at the MPI Pavilion, welcoming more than 780 freshmen to join the MPI family. During his speech Professor Lei Heong Iok, President of the Institute, encouraged the new MPI members to do their best to focus on their studies and to develop into well-rounded individuals full of merit and virtue.

At the ceremony President Lei expressed his warm welcome to the freshmen among whom there were outstanding graduates from Macao secondary schools who desired to study at MPI. Others were from the Chinese Mainland with scores in the College Entrance Examination qualifying them for key universities. There were also international exchange students from Taiwan, Cambodia, Portugal, the UK and the USA. During the President’s speech, Professor Lei promised that MPI would definitely not fail the parents and students in the trust they had bestowed on the Institute, and that the teaching staff would definitely devote all their efforts to help the students complete their studies successfully. Professor Lei encouraged students to focus on their studies and work hard, to respect their teachers, honour the truth and foster critical thinking, to be honest and ethical and to develop their inner and outer selves, Last but not least, they should learn to share and practice friendship. Professor Lei also stated in his speech that MPI would continue to perfect and improve teaching quality. Based on the Institute’s successful institutional review by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (UK), and professional accreditation of the programmes of Science in Computing, Accounting, E-commerce, and Public Administration (Portuguese), MPI intends to make further advances with academic reviews of every programme and to educate top-class professionals for the community.

On behalf of all MPI teaching staff, Dr. Adrian J. Davis of the School of Public Administration wished all students well in climbing the mountain together on their journey of learning and professional development. He also encouraged students to apply their knowledge in their careers and to gain personal fulfillment in this fast-changing society.

The freshmen's representative, Lam Iok Heng, a first year student of the Bachelor of Arts in Portuguese-Chinese Translation and Interpretation Programme, noted that the “university” is a place for dreams, but also a place for life and career plans. Lam, who had already completed a Law degree, chose MPI to be the place to continue her studies in order to equip herself with a more comprehensive and expressive ability in Portuguese in a professional field.

A number of representatives from government departments, organizations, enterprises and individuals who sponsored MPI's most excellent students with nearly 300 scholarships, also attended the ceremony. They were the Macao Foundation, Henry Fok Foundation, Macao Public Administration and Civil Services Bureau, Macao Health Bureau, Macao Cultural Affairs Bureau, Macao Government Tourist Office, Macao Sport Development Board, Macao Social Welfare Bureau, Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute, Macao Productivity and Technology Transfer Center, Association for Adult Education of Macao, Companhia de Electricidade de Macau – CEM, S.A., Companhia de Telecomunicações de Macau S.A.R.L. – CTM , China Telecom (Macao) Co., Ltd, Sociedade de Jogos de Macau, S.A, The Venetian Cotai Limited, Wynn Resorts (Macao) S.A., Galaxy Entertainment Group, MGM Macau, Bank of China Macao Branch, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Macao), Tai Fung Bank Limited, Seng San Enterprises Ltd., Inspirational Youth Association, Macao Polytechnic Institute Alumni Association, CPA Australia, The Institution of Engineering and Technology, LT Game Limited, Macao Gaming Equipment Manufacturers Association and Macao Polytechnic Institute.

Witnessed by all the guests, and both solemn and touching, all freshmen swore an oath in joining the MPI family. More than a thousand guests, teaching staff, freshmen and parents attended the Opening Ceremony for Academic Year 2014-2015.
