MPI’s Honorary Professorship Conferred on Professor Shaw Chong-Hai

Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) has conferred an honorary professorship on Professor Shaw Chow-Hai. Professor Shaw is Dean of the College of Social Sciences of the Chinese Culture University in Taiwan, where he concurrently holds Directorships of the “Institute for Cross-Strait and Chinese Mainland Studies” and the “Institute for Macao Studies”. Professor Shaw has been engaged in studies of Cross-Strait relations, including research on Taiwan’s relations with Macao and Hong Kong. Professor Lei Heong Iok, President of MPI, recognised Professor Shaw’s support for MPI and anticipated that MPI would continue to enjoy his support in promoting cultural and academic cooperation between Macao and Taiwan.

The ceremony, held at MPI on 26 March 2014, was witnessed by the heads of MPI’s various academic, research and administrative units. Professor Lei noted that since Macao’s return to the Motherland MPI has conferred 13 honorary professorships upon recipients including, amongst others, the former Foreign Minister of China Professor Li Zhaoxing, the former US Secretary of State Professor Henry Alfred Kissinger, the Japanese scholar Professor Daisaku Ikeda, and a former Portuguese education minister. Professor Lei said that this honorary professorship embodied MPI’s appreciation of Professor Shaw’s support, both during his term at MPI as an Invited Professor and after his return to Taiwan, and he hoped that he would continue to write about and contribute to Cross-Strait exchanges.

Professor Shaw, born in Sichuan in 1946, received his doctoral degree from Saint Louis University, US. He is specialised in research on cross-Strait relations, international relations, Macao-Taiwan relations and China studies. Among his ample research output are included “Beijing’s Policies Towards Taiwan 1979-2013”, “Cross-Strait Political Relations in the New Era”, and “Cross-Strait Relations”, each important works of reference with respect to Cross-Strait studies published over the last three years.
