MPI’s Students Expanded their International Horizons in Australia

To encourage the students to acquire more international commercial expertise, further enhance their global competitiveness and expand their horizons, the Student Affairs Office of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) organised in the past summer the “Overseas Study Programme”, under which outstanding MPI students went to Melbourne, Australia, and attended a 3-week intensive course at the famous Monash University. The course featured four key aspects, namely developing global perspectives, fostering the ability to adapt to diverse cultures, strengthening the global professional skills and appreciating different corporate cultures. All participating students agreed that this overseas study tour was a greatly gainful experience since their professional knowledge had been deepened while their horizons broadened.

In recent years, Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) has fostered increased cooperation with various tertiary institutions in Portuguese-speaking countries. Such an initiative represents MPI’s commitment to align with China’s ‘Belt and Road’ policy, contributes to the realisation of Macao’s development goal to become a service platform between China and Portugal and to drive the internationalisation of the higher education sector in Macao. Over 200 students are now participating in exchanges between MPI and these institutions during this academic year, a record-high in terms of student numbers and programmes involved.

Master of Physical Education programme opens at MPI to nurture high-calibre professionals in sports research for Macao

The opening ceremony of the second cycle of the Master of Physical Education programme, which is jointly organised by the Shanghai University of Sport and Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), was held at MPI in the afternoon of 22 September. The ceremony was officiated by Professor Im Sio Kei, Vice President of MPI and Professor Zhao Xiaohan, Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Physical Education and Sport Training, Shanghai University of Sport (SUS). The officiating guests encouraged new students to work hard in their studies, thereby advancing the research in sport sciences and becoming high-calibre professionals who can contribute to the society with their application-based knowledge in this field.

The opening ceremony for students entering the Master of Public Administration (MPA) programme in 2017 was held at Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) at 10am on 9th September. The programme is jointly offered by the Chinese Academy of Governance and MPI with the support of the Public Administration and Civil Service Bureau of the Macao SAR. Guests attending the ceremony included Professor Zhu Guoren, Director of the Department of Graduate Education of the Chinese Academy of Governance; Mr. Liu Dongsong, Deputy Director of the Training Centre of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR; Professor Lei Heong Iok, President of MPI and Ms. Lo Kin I, Deputy Director of the Public Administration and Civil Service Bureau. In their officiating speeches, Professor Zhu, President Lei and Ms. Lo encouraged students to work very hard in their studies and research. They expressed their hopes for students to excel as public administration professionals and contribute their expertise to the Macao SAR.

For the purpose of welcoming freshmen and assisting them quickly to adapt to the new campus environment, the Student Affairs Office of Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) has organised the Campus Orientation for Academic Year 2017/2018 with the theme of “Youth in Full Bloom at MPI”, meaning that all freshmen have chosen MPI as the stage to pursue their dreams and develop their talents.

MPI welcomes over a hundred international students in the new academic year to encourage intercultural engagement and nurture international talents

Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) welcomed over a hundred international and exchange students in the 2017/2018 academic year. MPI’s commitment to have more international students on campus aligns with China’s ‘Belt and Road’ initiative, contributes to the realisation of Macao’s ‘One Centre, One Platform’ development goal and helps to foster an international experience. MPI’s international and exchange students this year come from countries including Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, Mozambique, France, the United States, Pakistan, Cambodia and also from several provinces in the Chinese Mainland. They will be studying in the Institute’s various bachelor’s programmes such as Chinese-Portuguese Translation, International Chinese Language Education, Computing, Public Administration, Gaming and Recreation Management, Nursing, Management, and Marketing. MPI hopes to foster the learning motivation of local students by encouraging intercultural engagement on campus.

Cultivate Talents with high standards of ethical behavior for Macau

Macao Polytechnic Institute has successfully held the opening ceremony for the new academic year 2017-2018 in the afternoon of August 18 at the MPI Sports Pavilion. This year has witnessed a total number of 900 new students getting enrolled in various MPI programs, more than 80% are local students, and about 10% from the mainland and overseas. During the ceremony, more than 500 outstanding students were awarded scholarships sponsored by governmental agencies, organizations, enterprises, and individuals. The institute adheres to its management philosophy of "Small but beautiful and exquisite" and also emphasizes its long-term commitments to cultivate talents for the Macao community. Witnessed by all the guests, and both solemn and touching, all the freshmen swore an oath - "MPI's heart, our new start" - in joining the MPI family.

MPI welcomes 900 outstanding freshmen in the new academic year

With its educational principles of student-centeredness and quality teaching, Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) has long been very popular with students. Over 6,600 students applied for admission to MPI in the 2017/2018 academic year with around 900 joining as freshmen. Over 80% of MPI’s new students are from Macao, including those who are either academically high rankers or local/international award winners in fields such as science and technology, sports, arts, languages, debating and public speaking. The Institute will award scholarships to 150 high-achieving freshmen to encourage them to do their very best in their studies so as to contribute to the society in the future.

Professor Huang Youyi, Executive Vice President of the Translators Association of China, Visits MPI Chinese-Portuguese Machine Translation Laboratory

To enhance cooperation and exchange, Professor Huang Youyi, member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the Executive Vice President of the Translators Association of China, together with Professor Zhong Weihe, Co-chair of Language Big Data Alliance, visited the Chinese-Portuguese Machine Translation Laboratory at Macao Polytechnic Institute on the 9th of August and was warmly welcomed by Professor Lei Heong Iok, President of MPI. Professor Huang spoke highly of the Laboratory's Chinese-Portuguese Machine Translation engine, the world's leading translation engine providing speech recognition and other technical services support for the development of the “One Belt and One Road” initiative and “Service platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries”. Professor Huang expressed his hope that the laboratory would speed up research and development and contribute to the Language Services Industry in Macao in the near future.

MPI Students Participated in Language and Culture Summer Course in Beijing

The Student Affairs Office of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and the Beijing Language and Culture University (BCLU) jointly organised the “National Language Working Committee’s Putonghua Shuiping Ceshi and Cultural Study Course” in July 2017. 20 MPI students of different academic disciplines travelled with Professor Sang Dapeng to Beijing this summer to begin a 15-day linguistic and cultural expedition.

World Chinese-Portuguese Translation Competition awards ceremony successfully held

Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) successfully hosted the awards ceremony of the ‘World Chinese-Portuguese Translation Competition’ today (9th of August). Jointly organised by the Tertiary Education Services Office and MPI, with the Language Big Data Alliance as the supporting unit, the competition aims to enhance the exchange of Chinese-Portuguese translation techniques between students of higher education institutions around the world, to train Chinese-Portuguese translation professionals, and to further promote the application of advances in Chinese-Portuguese translation teaching and research in Macao, the Chinese Mainland and the Lusophone countries according to the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative.

MPI hosts awards ceremony for the 9th Macao-wide IT Competition – ALICE 3D Programming Contest

To continuously enhance and nurture the interest of students and the Macao community in creative technology and 3D programming, Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) has organised the ‘Macao-wide IT Competition – ALICE 3D Programming Contest’ every year since 2008. Now in its ninth year, this competition has become very popular in the local academic sector. The theme of this year’s contest is ‘Macao – our livable city’.

MPI and European Commission co-organise the 7th Conference Interpreting Seminar

Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and the Directorate-General for Interpretation of the European Commission (EC) are joining hands to organise the 7th Conference Interpreting Seminar from 10 to 21 July. This collaboration aims to nurture high-calibre talent in conference interpretation as well as train Portuguese university teachers working in Macao and the Chinese Mainland. More than ten professional translators and Portuguese teachers from Macao and Chinese universities, together with representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, are attending this two-week advanced training in interpretation.

MPI students win silver award at the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition

Students and teachers from the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) participated in the grand finals of the ‘2017 Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition’ held in Hong Kong from 3-5 July. Tens of thousands of university students took part in this annual event which aims to promote innovative thinking. A project team comprising four MPI students: Lam Choi Ut, Song In Man, Ngai Chong Cheong and Lai Chi Meng won the silver award at the competition, bringing great honour to Macao. The student team worked on a project entitled ‘Big-data based smart parking management solution’ under the supervision of Dr. Jacky Tang, Associate Professor of MPI’s Computing programme.

MPI Received APQN Quality Award with its teaching quality being recognised internationally

The representatives of Macao Polytechnic Institute attended the annual meeting of the Asia-Pacific Quality Network (APQN) held in Moscow, Russia in late May and MPI was awarded the APQN’s Best/Model Internal Quality Assurance Award. This is the second time since 2015; MPI, the first higher education institution in Hong Kong and Macao to receive this international award, was again awarded the APQN Quality Award and it gives glory to Macao.

MPI Students Visit the General Consulate of Portugal in Macao and Hong Kong

The Student Affairs Office of Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) is organising a series of summer activities for the MPI international students. Following the spectacular show proudly presented by the performers from the Chinese National Peking Opera Theatre, in which the MPI international students could glimpse the very essence of the traditional Chinese culture, the Student Affairs Office again arranged a visit on 21 June 2017 to the General Consulate of Portugal in Macao and Hong Kong for around 30 MPI students from such lusophone countries as Portugal, Brazil and Cape Verde.

Mr. Xue Xiaofeng, Deputy Director of Liaison Office of the Central People's Government (CPG) in the Macao SAR and his delegation visited the One Country Two Systems Research Centre at Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) on 23 June 2017 for a meeting with its staff. The delegation received a warm welcome from Professor Im Sio Kei, Vice President of MPI and Dr. Leng Tiexun, Head of the research centre. Mr. Xue encouraged the centre’s research team to promote collaboration and innovative thinking, and to produce more fruitful research results in the future.

Mr. Nie Changbin, Vice Secretary-General of the People’s Government of Hubei Province, leading a group of delegates from the Province, visited the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) on 22 June 2017. The delegation was warmly received by Professor Im Sio Kei, Acting President of MPI and the Institute’s teaching staff and students. Both parties enthusiastically exchanged their views on fostering the collaboration between universities in Hubei and MPI regarding the academic exchange of their teachers and students.

MPI Held Graduation Ceremony for Academic Year 2016-2017

The Macao Polytechnic Institute held the graduation ceremony for the academic year 2016-2017, witnessing a total cohort of 650 students graduating from its 20 Bachelor's degree programs and majors this year. The Chief Executive of Macao Dr. Chui Sai On officiated the ceremony and underscored the SAR government's commitments to promoting the development of education, and to driving the education industry towards modernization and smart management, and stimulating innovation in education. The SAR government is resolved to establish effective and sustained mechanisms for its education system and talents training. To that effect, the government pledged mufti-layered measures to develop the education industry, through policy supports, resource investment, continuous refinement of mechanisms etc. The Chief Executive also encouraged MPI to leverage its unique strengths and advantages so as to provide more professional and practical talents to Macao.

The IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks successfully concluded

The 18th IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks, WoWMoM), organised by Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and IEEE Computer Society, the Technical Committee on Computer Communications, Queen Mary University of London, UK, and Missouri University of Science and Technology, USA, came to a close at MPI on 15 June. Delegates engaged in various dynamic academic exchanges, agreeing that this conference was very informative and fruitful.

Inauguration of the 18th IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks

The 18th IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM 2017) was inaugurated at Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) on 13 June. Over 130 scholars from 26 countries/regions and 71 universities and research institutes gathered in Macao to discuss the latest global trends in science and technology. The symposium covers a wide range of technical aspects of wireless communications, the Internet of Things, big data and smart cities. The organiser hopes to demonstrate the development and the strength of science and technology in Macao through this joint symposium in order to enhance the level of scientific research in wireless communications, network and mobile technology, multimedia networks and related areas such as the concept of smart cities.

On June 6, Macao Polytechnic Institute’s (MPI) research patent in Big Data Application, “Canarin: A cloud-based real-time environmental monitoring system”, was invited by the University of Bologna, Italy, to be presented at the G7-Environment 2017 of the 43rd G7 Summit held in Italy, and was commended by experts and scholars from all over the world. To promote cross-cultural / cross-country dialogue and national cooperation, interaction, unity and sustainable development, forums devoted to environment, health, transportation, culture, science, agriculture, finance, labor etc. have been convened. Professor Marcus Im, Vice President of MPI, led a delegation to attend the forum.

Over 130 scholars and experts from around the world will gather in Macao to discuss the latest global trends in science and technology. The symposium covers a wide range of technical aspects of wireless communications, the Internet of Things, big data and smart cities. Topics include energy-efficient multimedia networks, next-generation networks, wireless network analysis and optimization, context-awareness, wearables and social networks, localization and tracking technology, analytics and machine learning, mobile data offloading, multimedia system optimization, resource management and quality-of-service provisioning.

To strengthen the higher education cooperation and exchange between mainland China and Macao, a delegation led by Professor Hu Jun, President of Jinan University, and accompanied by Mr Ma Iao Hang, the President of the Jinan University Macao Alumni Association, visited Macao Polytechnic Institute on 3 June and was warmly welcomed by President Lei Heong Iok. Both parties agreed to reinforce the academic cooperation and students and faculty exchange and discuss the idea of cooperation on Portuguese language.

To align with the country’s ‘Belt and Road’ initiative and the strategy to establish Macao’s role as a platform of cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) signed an agreement on training Portuguese-speaking professionals with Hong Kong & Macao Affairs Office of Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government under the commission of the Macao SAR Government. Both parties will work together to teach Portuguese to professionals from Jiangsu engaging in trade, investment, education, agriculture, tourism and fishery sectors, providing them with more opportunities to cooperate with Portuguese-speaking countries.

The Communication University of China and MPI engage in an exchange on the beauty of recitation

More than 30 teachers and students from several universities, including the Communication University of China (CUC), visited the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) on 22 May for a cultural exchange and academic sharing session. Professor Lu Jingchao, member of the national committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the Dean of the School of Presentation Art of CUC, chaired a session entitled ‘The Beauty of Recitation’. Students from CUC also put on a wonderful recitation and clapper talk - tongue twister performance, receiving rounds of applause from a hundred teachers and students who were enchanted by this superb demonstration of prose and sound.

MPI’s Bachelor of Arts in Visual Art Programme Successfully Accredited by HEEACT

The Bachelor of Arts in Visual Art programme of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) has successfully passed a programme validation exercise by the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan (HEEACT), the second bachelor’s degree programme of arts in Macao to be academically accredited after the Institute’s Music programme in 2015. HEEACT, a renowned academic accreditation institution in Asia, announced the review report of this exercise on its website, providing very positive comments on the programme and acknowledging its contribution to the Macao SAR Government’s strategy of developing the city’s cultural and creative industries. HEEACT’s report also commended the programme for its excellent contents, educational resources, support for teaching and learning, as well as quality assurance and enhancement.

Nurturing World Champion Martial Arts Athletes, MPI’s Bachelor of Physical Education Successfully Accredited by HEEACT

The Bachelor of Physical Education of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), has successfully passed a programme validation exercise by the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan (HEEACT), being the first bachelor degree programme in Macao to undergo an academic review for such sports professionals. HEEACT, a renowned academic accreditation institution in Asia, is a member of the Asia Pacific Quality Network and the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education. Announcing the review report on its website, HEEACT provides very positive comments on the programme and acknowledges the programme content, teaching quality, learning environment for students and the support mechanisms of teaching and learning at MPI.

MPI organises Music programme’s graduation concert to exhibit the blossoming of talents

MPI’s Bachelor of Arts in Music programme hosted a graduation concert featuring its class of 2017 students on the evening of 12 May. This concert showcases the talents and achievements of the programme’s graduating students and demonstrates the Institute’s outstanding quality of music teaching. Over 40 students and their teachers performed that evening, staging a superb concert for over 200 enthusiastic music lovers who responded with repeated rounds of applause.

The Cross-Strait, Hong Kong and Macao Forum on Music Education in Schools opened on 8 May at the South China Normal University (SCNU). Over a hundred scholars and teachers specialising in music education gathered in Guangzhou to participate in various activities including exchanges, workshops and roundtable discussions to explore the linkage between tertiary music education in training music teachers and its relevance to basic education.

Macao Polytechnic Institute Motivates Students for Exams!

For the purpose of cheering up students for exams and motivating students to prepare for exams with a positive attitude, the Student Affairs Office and Student Union of Macao Polytechnic Institute have distributed free drinks to students, and also set up a “Message Board”, where students can leave their wishes and blessings. Moreover, the Student Affairs Office has invited a senior student who is a balloon artist to twist colourful balloons for students.

MPI’s Bachelor of Accounting passed Learning Programme Review by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ)

The Bachelor of Accounting programme of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) has successfully passed the Learning Programme Review conducted by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ). This marks the first degree programme in the field of accounting to have passed an international academic review in Macao. The panel gave very positive feedback to the programme regarding its teaching, academic development and research capabilities which together create an excellent learning environment for students. Having previously been accredited by professional bodies such as the CPA Australia and ACCA UK, this successful international review has highlighted the superb quality of higher education in Macao and is yet another demonstration of MPI’s excellence in teaching. Following this positive exercise, MPI’s academic endeavours will be further intensified to contribute to the nurturing of talents for Macao and neighbouring regions.

Collaboration of Macao Polytechnic Institute and Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau Strengthened

To continuously enhance the collaboration between Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau (CTT) on the next generation of Internet Protocol (IPv6), Professor Marcus Im, the Vice President of MPI, Dr. Rita Tse, the Director of the School of Public Administration, and Dr. Chan Tong Lam, the Coordinator of the Computing Programme welcomed Mr. Francisco Leong, the Department Head of the Telecommunications Technologies and Resource Management of CTT, Mr. Billy Ip, the Head of the Division of the Telecommunications Technologies, and Mr. Lei Kuong Leong, the Head of the Division of the Resource Management. They exchanged their opinions in the collaboration of the promotion, research and development of the IPv6 networking protocol in Macao. Despite the fact that IP addresses are running out, the demand of IP addresses continues to increase. IPv6 becomes the solution to resolve this situation as it provides almost unlimited number of IP addresses. Both parties agreed to work together and be well-prepared for the changeover from IPv4 to IPv6.

MPI Student’s Artworks have been Selected by the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours Exhibition for Three Consecutive Years

After receiving “The John Purcell Paper Prize” (Awarded artwork “Mario Night”) in 2015 and “The Leathersellers’ Award” (Awarded artwork “Working Alone”) in 2016, MPI student Filipe Miguel das Dores (Bachelor of Arts in Visual Art, Year 4) has two artworks “Which Payphone is Ringing?” and “Which Mirror Reflects the Ringing Payphone?” selected by the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours 205th Exhibition. Standing out from nearly 2000 artworks, this is the third consecutive year for Filipe to have artworks selected by the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours Exhibition. Filipe has shown the high learning standard of Macao Polytechnic Institute, and does credit to Macao.

Sharing Session by Professors of the University of Coimbra on Furthering Study in Portugal

The Student Affairs Office at Macao Polytechnic Institute (“MPI” or “the Institute”) held an “Information Session on Postgraduate Study in Portugal and Academic Sharing“ , in which Professor Pedro Godinho and Professor Arnaldo Coelho from the University of Coimbra were invited to present the information of furthering study and career planning to MPI students. The “Information Session on Postgraduate Study in Portugal and Academic Sharing”, part of MPI’s “Postgraduate Skills Training Series”, was separated into 2 sections. The first section presented information about the University of Coimbra, and the second section released the annual report of the job market. It was a lively and informative sharing for the students.

Macao Polytechnic Institute held a “Sharing Session by Alumnus Ye Tiansheng: MPI's Spirit Guides Us Through Life's Challenges”, in which the alumnus from the Bachelor of E-Commerce Programme Mr. Ye Tiansheng was invited to share with MPI students his experience of further study in the United States of America and of being an entrepreneur, and especially to convey a positive message to his junior classmates and to encourage them to follow their dreams. The sharing session attracted nearly 100 students and academic staff members to attend.

The Student Affairs Office at Macao Polytechnic Institute (“MPI” or the “Institute”) held a “Sharing Session by Alumnus Liu Haixiang: Cycling along the Silk Road” on 3rd April 2017 and MPI Alumnus Mr. Liu Haixiang was invited to share his experience with MPI students. Since 2015, Mr. Liu has started his cycling trip, traveling to more than 10 countries along the Silk Road, wishing to promote the Chinese cultures in those countries and encourage the youth to overcome the difficulties to realize their dreams.

MPI’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing Programme being the world’s first to receive its successful International Subject Review from the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), UK

The internationally prominent Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), UK announced on its website on 7th March 2017 that MPI’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing Programme (Undergraduate Nursing) meets all the standards and successfully achieved the International Subject Review conducted by QAA. The approach of judgment and review criteria were reported to be the same for some of the best UK universities such as the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford. MPI has achieved “confidence” for the first internationally recognised institutional review in 2014, which was conducted by QAA in Macao. Similarly, MPI’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing Programme has been the world’s first successful International Subject Review by QAA.

MPI Student Union visited Yunnan and Shaoguan for exchange with universities in Mainland China

Macao Polytechnic Institute Student Union organized two cultural exchanges to Yunnan and Shaoguan with universities in Mainland China during the Christmas holiday in 2016. In order to widen students’ horizons and deepen their understanding of the national condition in China, more than 60 students from different majors went on a week-long handicraft and cultural tour in Yunnan University of Finance and Economics, and another week-long Lingnan culture and service tour in Shaoguan University.

Macao Polytechnic Institute - Careers Day 2017

Macao Polytechnic Institute (“MPI” or the “Institute”) held a series of activities for its “Careers Day 2017” with the theme “Passionate Dreams Pave the Way for Future Achievements”. More than 1,200 registrations from students and prospective graduates were recorded in response to more than 1,500 job vacancies offered by 39 participating companies and organisations. Endorsed by society and hiring firms, and with their quality and overall performance positively acknowledged, MPI’s graduates could find employment, on average, within slightly more than one month after graduation, and their average salary had risen by five percents.

The application period for admission to Bachelor’s programmes offered by Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) in 2017/18 has ended. MPI has consistently been the most popular choice among local secondary students for university education with its internationally recognised education, vibrant campus life, as well as the excellent further education and career prospects it offers. This year MPI received applications from close to 4,000 candidates, witnessing intense competition for admission into its undergraduate programmes.

To strengthen the collaboration and academic exchanges in higher education between Macao and the United States, together with the goals of fostering scientific research activities, promoting teaching quality, and broadening the students’ horizons, Professor Jayathi Y. Murthy, Dean of the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, has visited the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) recently and received a warm welcome from Professor Marcus Im, the Vice-President of MPI. During her visit, she exchanged views with the faculty staff and the students from the Computing Programme of MPI. Professor Murthy congratulated MPI on its success in the academic and research achievements, both of which have obtained international recognition through acclaimed accreditation organisations. She hoped that the visit would further deepen the collaboration between the two universities.

MPI’s Bachelor of Social Work Programme Passed Learning Programme Review by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ)

As a result, HKCAAVQ also concluded that MPI has an established management structure and processes, and also has a quality assurance system to manage and continuously review the operation of the BSW programme. Supported by adequate financial and physical resources, the Programme has clear objectives and learning outcomes, which are aligned with the admission requirements and the approaches used for teaching and learning, and student assessment. It was demonstrated that the BSW programme is comparable to a Bachelor’s degree programme pitched at the Hong Kong Qualifications Framework (HKQF) Level 5.

Co-organized by Student Affairs Office and the Alliance Française de Macao, the French Comics Festival was held on 10-18 January 2017 as part of the French Cultural Activity Series. Florence Cestac, a well-known French cartoonist, participated in the French Comics Festival and exhibited her art works.

City’s First Speech Therapy Bachelor Programme to be Offered at MPI in 2017/2018

Mr. António Costa, Prime Minister of the Portuguese Republic presided at the MPI opening ceremony at MPI Auditorium for Joint Laboratory of Chinese/Portuguese/English Machine Translation and launch ceremony for two Portuguese books held on October 11, to display the fruits of long-term cooperation and exchange between China and Portugal and to support and promote the common development of Mainland China, Portuguese-speaking countries and Macao. Prime Minister Costa’s presence and speech received a warm welcome from MPI staff and students. Prime Minister Costa spoke highly of MPI’s contribution to Sino-Portuguese cooperation, affirmed the advantages of MPI in Portuguese teaching and research, and encouraged MPI to achieve more in promoting cooperation and exchange between China and Portuguese-speaking countries. Fruitful Achievement of Sino-Portuguese Cooperation
MPI Portuguese Language Teaching Materials Distributed in China

With the rapid development of economic and trade relations between China and Lusophone countries, cooperation has become more frequent in talent development and cultural exchanges. The Macao Polytechnic Institute has been engaged in Chinese-Portuguese translation teaching and research for more than a century, with the strongest team of experienced teachers and translators in China and even Asia. With the support of Dr. Alexis Tam, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macau SAR Government, MPI has further strengthened and fostered the cooperation on Portuguese teaching and research. Over the past decade, the number of higher education institutions offering bachelor’s degree programmes in Portuguese language has risen dramatically from 6 to 26. Macao higher education institutions and educational organizations have also launched various Portuguese language courses. In order to tackle the problem of a lack of Portuguese language teaching materials and the standardisation of Portuguese language teaching in higher education institutions, MPI and the University of Lisbon have jointly compiled three sets of teaching materials for students and teachers, entitled Português Global, with audio-visual discs for teaching.

The latest ‘Evaluation Report of 2016 Chinese University rankings’ recently published by the university research team of the Chinese University Alumni Association (CUAA) announced the latest Chinese Universities Rankings, Star Ratings of Universities in the Chinese Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, Chinese Universities Rankings by Category and Chinese Universities Rankings by Outstanding Alumni of 2016. Peking University topped the list of the 2016 Chinese Universities Rankings with Tsinghua University at second and Fudan University at third, while Wuhan University and Zhejiang University are ranked 4th and 5th respectively. Among the rankings of universities of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, Macao Polytechnic Institute continues to rank among 4-star universities in China and its ranking as one of the high quality universities in China suggests recognition of its teaching quality.

MPI Computing Programme Accredited by UK IET Again

The Bachelor of Science in Computing programme at Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) has been accredited once again by the UK’s Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). This programme, first accredited by the IET in 2011, is the earliest engineering degree programme in Macao successfully going through international academic review. Students of this programme from the 2009/2010 cohort onwards are eligible upon graduation to obtain internationally recognised professional qualifications in the UK.

To continuously enhance and nurture the interest of students and the Macao community in creative technology and 3D programming, MPI has recently organised the ‘8th Macao-wide IT Competition - ALICE 3D Programming Contest’. The awards ceremony of the contest was held at MPI’s lecture theatre on 29th July, during which the ‘first prizes’ of the secondary school and open categories, the ‘most creative idea prize’ and ‘merit prizes’ were awarded. MPI and European Commission enter into new chapter of cooperation

A delegation from Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) visited the Council of the European Commission (EC) in Brussels, Belgium from 30th June to 1st July, coinciding with the tenth anniversary of cooperation between the Institute and the Council of EC. The MPI delegation received a warm welcome from representatives of the EC including Dr. Florika Fink-Hooijer, Director-General of the European Commission’s Department for Interpretation; Mr. Filip Majcen, Director in the European Commission's Directorate-General for Translation; Ms. Anabela Frade, Head of the Portuguese Interpretation Unit; Ms. Etelvina Gaspar, Head of the Translation Office and correspondent of the training programme in Macao; and Ms. Cristina de Preter, Head of the Portuguese Language Department, together with experts from related departments.

“2016 Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition” Successfully Held in MPI

The “2016 Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition”, jointly organised by Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and Macao Computer Society, was successfully completed in MPI on 5th July. Over 50 teams from 13 cities and regions within the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region, including Guangdong, Jiangxi, Fujian, Hunan, Hainan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing, Guangxi, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao; and more than 20,000 students participated in the competition. Among all, Macao Polytechnic Institute, South China University of Technology, Southwest Forestry University, Xiamen University of Technology and Hainan University received the Gold Award.

MPI organises science summer camp for secondary students

Over 40 senior secondary students from more than ten schools in Macao participated in the “MPI Science Summer Camp 2016” organised by Macao Polytechnic Institute’s School of Health Sciences from 4th to 7th July. The summer camp aims to arouse the interest of Macao youth in the field of science, introduce them to the wonders of medical science and establish a foundation for their further studies in this area, as well as to help secondary students choose a suitable bachelor’s programme in the future.

MPI Hosts Graduation Ceremony for 2015-2016 Academic Year

Macao Polytechnic Institute successfully held its Graduation Ceremony for the academic year 2015-2016, witnessing over 600 graduates being conferred their bachelor degrees or senior college diplomas. The ceremony was officiated by the Chief Executive of Macao Dr. Chui Sai On, who reiterated the SAR government’s steadfast commitment to prioritizing policies for education development, and implementing the strategies of “Education-driven Prosperity for Macao” and “Building Macao by Capable Talents” in its imminent Five-Year Strategic Plan. A pledge was also made by the government to reform its Regulation on Higher Education, and to speed up investments in mobilizing resources for higher education, with a view to nurturing talents with multiple capabilities for the moderate adjustment of the local economy towards diversification.

MPI’s Bachelor of Arts in Chinese-Portuguese/Portuguese-Chinese Translation and Interpretation Programme Passed Academic Review by Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES), Portugal

MPI's Bachelor's programme in Chinese-Portuguese/Portuguese-Chinese Translation, which is jointly offered by the Institute's School of Languages and Translation and the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, has recently passed an academic review by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES), Portugal. This marks a recognition of MPI's academic quality, and that the programme provides excellent teaching and well-endowed learning opportunities and environment for its students.

Macao Polytechnic Institute visits University of Coimbra in Portugal to attend IEEE International Symposium

A team of researchers from Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) attended and presented academic papers at the world-leading Seventeenth International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM 2016) which was held at the University of Coimbra in Portugal from 21st to 24th June. During this year’s symposium, the organiser - the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) - announced that the upcoming eighteenth symposium will take place at MPI in 2017. Following MPI’s efforts in the past two years and its subsequent successful bid to host this event, it is expected that over 100 renowned researchers and practitioners worldwide will gather at the Institute next year to promote scientific and academic developments in Macao.

MPI’s Translation Programme Positively Reviewed
by New Zealand’s Academic Quality Agency

The Bachelor of Arts programme in Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation, offered by Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), has been positively reviewed by the Academic Quality Agency for New Zealand Universities (AQA). This marks the first degree programme in the field of translation and interpretation to be internationally reviewed in Macao. The review panel commended the programme’s teaching quality, research development and student support services. This lays a solid foundation for further enhancement of the programme’s provision of student learning opportunities.

MPI Holds Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition

The “2016 Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition” will be jointly organized by Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and the Macao Computer Society on July 4-5, 2016 at MPI. The competition has four major aims: first, to promote the field of information technology in Macao education and thereby to become more application-oriented, market-oriented and society-oriented; second, to help cultivate the best IT talents for the Pearl River Delta Region (PDR)'s communities and economies; third, to provide students and teachers in Macao a cooperation and exchange platform for “exchanges, friendships, mutual learning, and improvements”; and fourth, to further enhance cooperation in the field of higher education and information technology between Macao and the PDR, leading to cooperative interaction for joint development while also expanding the space for regional development.

Computer Scientist Xiong Zhang Receives MPI Honorary Professorship

Macao Polytechnic Institute is pleased to announce that it has conferred an honorary professorship on Professor Xiong Zhang. Professor Xiong is a computer scientist and works at Beihang University. As an honorary professor of MPI, Professor Xiong will help strengthen inter-varsity academic collaboration and reinforce MPI’s research development in the Applied Sciences. The conferment ceremony was held on 6 May 2016, together with Professor Xiong’s academic lecture on “The Era of Big Data”. Professor Xiong received the letter of appointment from MPI President Professor Lei Heong Iok. They both noted the long-term collaboration between MPI and Beihang and anticipated that new heights will be reached after this event.

MPI Connect Issue 1 is Now Released

To unite alumni strength, foster the alumni relationship and allow alumni to closely find out the developments of its alma mater, Macao Polytechnic Institute announces the publication of MPI Connect. With the support of Dr. Alexis Tam Chon Weng, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR Government, the Community and all alumni, the first issue of MPI Connect has been released in April. MPI Connect will be published twice a year in two languages and it will include features such as interviews with alumni, reports of alumni association activities and news of recent developments of MPI.

MPI Hosts “Forum on Macao Integrated Tourism and Leisure Operators and Corporate Social Responsibility”

On 27 April, the Macao Polytechnic Institute successfully held the “Forum on Macao Integrated Tourism and Leisure Operators and Corporate Social Responsibility”. The forum was graciously supported by the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau SAR. It also attracted enthusiastic response from the Macao Federation of Trade Unions and six local integrated tourism and leisure operators to participate in this event.

MPI Expresses Deep Condolences on the Death of Renowned Peking Opera Master Mei Baojiu

Mei Baojiu, a renowned master of Peking Opera, accepted the invitation from Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI)’s President Professor Lei Heong Iok to visit Macao and the Institute in June for the second time, while they were both attending this year’s National People’s Congress and Chinese People’s Political Consultative Congress (NPC & CPPCC) just a little more than a month ago. Mei was set to stage an unprecedented performance of Peking Opera at MPI’s upcoming graduation ceremony in June to give his well wishes to graduates who are about to spread their wings and devote their services to society. The sudden and shocking news of Mei’s death due to illness yesterday (25th April) has caused great grief for everyone at MPI and for all those who love him dearly.

MPI Organises Seminar on “The Present Situation and Development Trends of Chinese Language Teaching”

To strengthen the students’ general education, MPI invited Professor Chen Ping, Chair in Chinese Studies and Director of Confucius Institute at The University of Queensland to deliver a speech on “The present Situation and Development Trends of Chinese Language Teaching”. Filipe Miguel das Dores (Year 3 student of the Visual Arts Programme) has two artworks selected by the RI of Painters in Water Colours 204th Exhibition, and one of the artworks “Working Alone” has been awarded “The Leathersellers’ Award”. The two artworks are displayed at the Mall Galleries, London between 6th to 16th April, 2016. Warm Congratulations!

MPI and University of Aveiro Sign Cooperation Agreement

Macao Polytechnic Institute recently signed a Cooperation Agreement with the University of Aveiro in Portugal to strengthen academic exchange and cooperation in the field of Arts. The agreement covers cooperation in areas such as Music, Design, Communication Sciences and Technology as well as research in Arts. The projects covered by the agreement include student exchanges, student and teacher learning trips, academic research, joint undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and joint conferences, among others.

MPI Launches Cultural and Creative Industries Teaching and Research Centre

The Macao Polytechnic Institute held the Opening Ceremony of the Cultural and Creative Industries Teaching and Research Centre on the Gomes campus on the morning of 1 April. The ceremony was officiated by Dr. Alexis Tam, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Deputy Director Pu Hailong of the Department of Education and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macao, Director Sou Chio Fai of the Tertiary Education Services Office, Chairman Leong Heng Teng of the Executive Committee of the Foundation of Cultural Industries, Vice-President Chan Peng Fai of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, and Professor Lei Heong Iok, President of MPI. The attendees included scholars, experts and practitioners in cultural and creative industries from the Chinese Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao.

New Programme in International Chinese Language Education at MPI

Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) will offer a new Bachelor of Arts degree programme in International Chinese Language Education in the 2016/2017 academic year, with the launching ceremony held yesterday (31 March 2016). MPI President Professor Lei Heong Iok noted that this is the first Bachelor’s programme offered by Macao’s higher education institutions in the field of International Chinese Language Education. Filling the gap in the higher education history of Macao, this programme will facilitate not only the development of the bilateral exchange platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries but also the implementation of the country’s ‘One Belt One Road’ strategy. This programme is open for application from now till 6 May 2016 at MPI’s admission website.

The Launching Ceremony of the MPI Taipa campus was held in the former campus of the University of Macau on 29th January. Two MPI Alumni Win 1st Runner Up at the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2016

IAAF Gold Label Road Race, the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2016, was held on 17th January 2016, the tournament attracting more than 74,000 entrants from around the world. Among the team representing Macao Polytechnic Institute alumnus Wang Kun was 1st runner up in the Half Marathon Challenge Men’s Overall and Men’s Senior Category while alumnus Iao Kuan Un won 1st runner up in the Men’s Master category, their achievements bringing great honour to MPI and Macao.

Lawerence Cheng Encourages Young People to Observe More and have a Bold Attempt

Invited by Macao Polytechnic Institute's School of Arts, Lawrence Cheng, one of Hong Kong's major media personalities, chaired a cross-media seminar entitled “Inventor, Creative” on November 4th. He commented that he believed that inspiration comes from our living surroundings, and he advised young people to be observant and grasp what is happening in the world, applying what they see by being bold in their attempts to convert their experiences into creative endeavours.

“A Little While” Exhibition

Organised by the School of Arts, 23 Year 4 students of the digital media design programme are hosting a student exhibition with the theme “A Little While”, which features more than 20 pieces of original works in 3D animation, motion graphics and interactive design. The exhibition is an opportunity for students to showcase the fruits of their 4 years of learning before graduation, allowing them to interact with each other and to improve their aesthetic sense and creativity, thus preparing them for professional contributions in the arts and cultural arena.

Sands China Ltd. Visits MPI

To strengthen the communication and collaboration of Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) with local enterprises, Mr. António Ramirez, the Senior Vice President of Human Resources, Sands China Ltd. and his delegation visited MPI on November 26th and received a warm welcome from Professor Lei Heong Iok, President of MPI. New Era of Cooperation between MPI and Bell Cambridge

A close partner of Macao Polytechnic Institute for more than a decade, Bell Educational Trust Cambridge is an internationally recognised English language institution which has contributed greatly to English language education in Macao. Recently, Professor Lei Heong Iok, President of MPI, led a delegation to visit Bell Cambridge and received a warm welcome from Chief Executive Greg Hoile. The 14th Macao-wide English Speech Contest and 21st “21st Century Cup” National English Speaking Competition Macao Regional Contest place on Saturday-Sunday, 14th-15th November 2015. The Macao-wide English Speech Contest was established in 2002, its purpose being to promote the use of English in Macao in the era of globalisation, to encourage people from all walks of life to learn English, and to promote English language teaching.

Professor Li Chunming Meet With Students

Professor Li Chunming, Deputy Director of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Hubei Province and Secretary of the Leading Party Members’ Group, paid a visit to Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) on 14 October 2015 to learn about the campus life of MPI's first cohort of outstanding Hubei students. Inauguration of New Management Board of Alumni Association

The MPI Alumni Association recently held a General Meeting at their office to elect the new cabinet for 2015 – 2017. During the meeting the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Wong U Kei, summarized the work and financial status of the Association over the last two years and this was approved by the Supervisory Committee. Following the election of new board members, Liu Kun Him and Ku Man Tat were elected as Presidents of the General Assembly and Supervisory Committee respectively, Wong U Kei continuing as President of the Board of Directors. The inauguration ceremony was held on October 16 at Waldo Hotel with Professor Lei Heong Iok, President of MPI and Mr. He Gang, representative from the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR, invited to witness the oaths given by the board members of MPI Alumni Association.

MPI Alumni Association’s “Power of Life” Career Planning Sharing Session Held

To cultivate a positive and optimistic attitude in our students and enable them to effectively plan for the future, MPI Alumni Association organized a "power of life" career planning sharing session. Mr. Ng Kuok Kun (K.K.), a boxing athlete in Macau, and Mr. Cheang Chi Meng (Miker), a mountaineering instructor, were invited to share with students their life experiences and how to face and overcome difficulties. During the session there were some highlighted excerpts shared, including competition and training clips of Ng Kuok Kuan and a clip of Miker Cheang climbing Mount Everest.

MPI Alumna Hoi Long’s Historic Bronze Medal Win in the Aquathlon World Championships Brings Great Honour to MPI and Macao

MPI Alumna Hoi Long has won a bronze medal in the Aquathlon World Championships (swimming and running) in the ‘Elite Woman Category’ with a total time of 30 minutes 8 seconds, at the International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Triathlon Grand Final and World Championships held in Chicago. It was the first time for Hoi Long to participate in this international competition and MPI expressed great appreciation and warmest congratulations on hearing of her outstanding achievement.

MGM MACAU Visits MPI

To strengthen the communication and collaboration of Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) with the gaming industry, Mr. Francis Tan, Vice President of Learning and Talent Management, MGM MACAU and his delegation visited MPI on 27th November. Ma Iao Hang Encourages Hubei Students to Equip Themselves Well and Achieve Their Full Potential at MPI

On August 31st, as the new academic year began, Mr. Ma Io Hang, member of the ninth Standing Committee of Hubei Province’s People's Political Consultative Conference and Vice President of the Office for Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Foreign Affairs, had a meeting with some outstanding MPI students from Hubei Province. Father of the Internet Encourages MPI Students to Engage in Innovative Research Activities

With a view to continuously improving the quality of its teaching, Macao Polytechnic Institute engages in exchanges with top-class universities from around the world in areas such as teaching, research and student learning, in order to strengthen the sharing of information and resources between MPI and other higher education institutions. The programme press conference was held recently in MPI. Through offering this programme CCU and MPI will provide MPI and Macao students opportunities for further study,and to cultivate their public administration talents, enable more mobility of talent, and further contribute to the social and economic development of Macao.

“2015 Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition” Successfully Held in MPI with Our Students Receiving a Distinguished Award

The “2015 Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition”, jointly organised by Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and Macao Computer Society, was successfully held in MPI. Over 50 teams from 13 cities and regions within the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region, including Guangdong, Jiangxi, Fujian, Hunan, Hainan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing, Guangxi, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. After a series of keen competitions all awards have been confirmed.

Social Welfare Bureau Scholarship to Support Outstanding Students
Nurturing High-Quality Social Work Professionals for the Community

The Social Welfare Bureau (SWB) and Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) signed a scholarship agreement on 1 July 2015. The signing ceremony was presided over by Mr Iong Kong Io, SWB Director, and Professor Lei Heong Iok, MPI President. According to the agreement, SWB will provide scholarships to four outstanding students from MPI’s Social Work programme on an annual basis. The goals are the encouragement of hard work among students, the training of more high-quality local Social Work professionals and the enhancement of the overall professional quality and academic capacity of Macao’s social services personnel.

1st MPI Alumni Day: A Huge Success

In order to reunite Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) past graduates to enable them to reminisce about college life, and to learn more about MPI’s achievements, the “1st MPI Alumni Day” was held in MPI on June 27 (Saturday). The event attracted hundreds of alumni from both home and overseas to gather at MPI. The Macao Polytechnic Institute Alumni Association (MPIAA) gladly contributed to society by donating all profits received to Orbis to help save the sight of people worldwide.

Joint Solo Exhibition in New York by MPI Professors: Hsu Hsiu Chu & Chen Chiu Jhin

Rooted in Macao and facing the world Dr. Hsu Hsiu Chu and Professor Chen Chiu Jhin, Director and Professor of the School of Arts, Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) respectively, held a joint solo exhibition in the Gallery of Amerasia Bank, New York from June 19th to 30th.. The exhibition was officially opened after a press conference at 2pm on June 19th, New York time, followed by an opening ceremony at 5pm. Many art lovers and artists attended the exhibition, and apart from rating the exhibits highly they also strongly supported the MPI professors being invited to exhibit in New York.

The “2015 Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition” will be held in Macao Polytechnic Institute to promote regional cooperation and joint development.

To foster cooperation in tertiary education and information technology between Macao and the Pearl River Delta Region (PDR), the “2015 Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition”, jointly organized by Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and Macao Computer Society, and co-organized by computer societies across China, is set to take place in Macao between July 3-4, 2015. The competition is intended to promote the development of education in the field of information technology in Macao, and to help cultivate the best IT talents for the PDR’s communities and economies. The competition attracts tens of thousands of college students to participate each year and MPI hopes that through it Macao can serve as a platform for “exchanges, friendships, mutual learning, and improvements” for cooperation and exchanges for college students in the PDR. This will further enhance cooperation within the PDR, leading to cooperative interaction for joint development and expanding the space for regional development.

Student Chen Yuhan Achieves “The Best Debater Award” in the 5th World Mandarin Debating Championship

As winners of the 12th Macao Inter-Tertiary Debating Competition, the MPI Putonghua Debating Team went on to represent Macao to compete with debaters from the National University of Singapore, the University of Hong Kong, Monash University and Renmin University of China in the largest Mandarin debating competition, the 5th World Mandarin Debating Championship.

MPI reaches new level of academic collaboration with the University of Lisbon to strengthen cooperation in Portuguese language learning between China, Portugal and Macao

To promote academic collaboration in the field of Portuguese language, Professor António Manuel da Cruz Serra and Professor João Barreiros, respectively Rector and Vice-Rector of the highest academic institution in Portugal, the University of Lisbon (ULisboa), visited Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) on June 17. The delegation was warmly received by Professor Lei Heong Iok, President of MPI. The two parties reached consensus on reinforcing cooperation in the field of Portuguese language, Public Management, and Education between the Chinese Mainland, Portugal and Macao, and on contributing to Macao’s strategic development as “a trade and economic cooperation service platform between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries” and “a Portuguese language teaching platform in the Asia-Pacific Region”.

MPI Visits Peking University and BLCU to Strengthen Cooperation in Portuguese Language Teaching and Research

To strengthen cooperation in Portuguese language teaching and research, Professor Lei Heong Iok, President of Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), recently visited Peking University (PU) and Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU). Both universities expressed their appreciation of MPI’s contribution to Portuguese language education. MPI Music Programme Organises Joint Concerts in Beijing

Over 4,300 Applications Received for Admission to MPI – MPI Programmes Most Popular Among Macao Students

The application period for admission to Bachelor’s programmes offered by Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) in 2015/2016 has ended and despite a decrease in the college-age population of Macao, with its internationally recognised education, vigorous campus life and the bright career prospects it offers, MPI has received over 4,300 admission applications and is, once again, the most popular choice among local secondary students for university education. In addition over 300 outstanding and talented students were recommended by local secondary school principals for admission to MPI, marking their recognition of the quality and standards of MPI’s education provision.

MPI Journal Ranks 6th in the “Duplicated Materials from Newspapers and Periodicals” Rankings

Renmin University of China's (RUC) “Duplicated Materials from Newspapers and Periodicals” Rankings 2014 and the 2014 Research Report on Reprinted Academic Directory for Duplicated Materials from Newspapers and Periodicals were announced in Beijing on March 31, 2015. About 400 guests attended the news conference including department heads of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China, Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of the People’s Republic of China, and experts and scholars from the field of evaluation of achievement in research in humanities and social sciences, as well as representatives from academic journals and academic institutions.

MPI Receives APQN Quality Award

The annual meeting of the Asia-Pacific Quality Network (APQN) was held in Kunming, China in late April, and Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) was awarded an APQN Quality Award by APQN at the event. Dr. Jagannath Patil, President of APQN, spoke highly of MPI’s efforts in teaching and research quality assurance, and acknowledged and commended MPI on its good practices in academic quality assurance. MPI is the first higher education institution in Macao to have received such an honour with its teaching quality again being recognised by an international assessment agency. Other awardees included renowned academic assessment agencies and persons who have made outstanding contributions to education, including Dr. Judith Eaton, President of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), USA, and the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA, UK).

Macao’s First Accredited HEI Programme in Creativity

The Bachelor of Arts programme in Music, offered by Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), has successfully passed a programme validation exercise by the Higher Education Evaluation & Accreditation Council of Taiwan (HEEACT) as announced on the HEEACT website on 31 March 2015. The programme validation exercise acknowledged the quality of the programme and reported significant recognition in areas such as provision of educational resources, support for teaching and learning, international exchange and cooperation, and quality assurance and enhancement.

The “MPI Open Day 2015” was held on 28 February 2015 on the main campus of Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) which showcased the Institute’s values, objectives, course development, professional facilities, research standards and learning resources. Former President of European Commission José Manuel Barroso to be Conferred MPI’s Honorary Professorship

Mr José Manuel Durão Barroso, Former President of the European Commission, visited Macao and received an honorary professorship from Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI). Mr Durão Barroso, world-renowned politician and expert in international affairs, was born in 1956 in Lisbon. Being a successful scholar and professional diplomat in Portugal he was elected to be a member of the Portuguese Assembly in 1985, following which he was appointed Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in 1987, Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1992, and Prime Minister of Portugal in April 2002. In November 2004 he was elected to be President of the European Commission.

Former Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing Holds Dialogue with MPI Students

“An Amazing Life as a Diplomat – Dialogue Between Professor Li Zhaoxing and MPI Students” was held in MPI Lecture Theatre on January 20, 2015. In his welcoming speech Professor Lei Heong Iok, President of Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), commented that “Professor Li Zhaoxing, former Foreign Minister, together with Dr. Henry Kissinger, former Secretary of State of the United States, visited MPI in 2009. We have been longing for the guests to visit us again for five years. Today, the former Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing is again here at MPI with the title of Honorary Professor of MPI to hold a dialogue with students, which is a great honour for MPI and also to higher education in Macao. All staff and students at MPI welcome Honorary Professor Li Zhaoxing with open arms, and I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Professor Li for his constant support for MPI!”

To commend and celebrate students and alumni for their outstanding performance at the 17th Incheon Asian Games 2014,the Student Affairs Office of Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) organized a celebration gathering. The students and alumni of MPI participated in the Incheon Asian Games in sports including Wushu, Karate, Judo, Swimming, Triathlon, Athletics, Diving, and Road Cycling. Amongst others Jia Rui, an MPI alumnus, brought home a silver medal in the men’s Changquan final, Paula Cristina Pereira Carion, an MPI alumna, won a bronze medal in Women's Kumite +68 kg, Li Yi and Huang Junhua, students of MPI, respectively won the silver medals in the women’s Jianshu/Qiangshu all-round and the men’s Nanquan/Nangun all-round (martial arts events).

MPI Students and Alumni Triumph at Incheon Asian Games

The students and alumni of Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) who have just competed at the 17th Asian Games currently held in Incheon, South Korea returned to Macao last night (25 September 2014) with their medals and outstanding accomplishments. An MPI delegation led by Vice President Professor Yin Lei received them at the airport and extended their heartfelt congratulations on their brilliant performances, filling the airport lobby with joy and tears.

Chairman Ma Chi Ngai of Science and Technology Development Fund Visits MPI to Strengthen Research Collaboration

Mr Ma Chi Ngai, Chairman of the Council of Administration of the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT), visited Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) on 23 September 2014. During the visit, he commended the endeavours of MPI in science and technology research and expressed his anticipation of strengthening mutual collaboration and exchange in relevant areas. The delegation was warmly received by MPI President Professor Lei Heong Iok, Vice President Professor Yin Lei and the research personnel. Professor Lei expressed his appreciation for the great support FDCT has provided for the research development of MPI. He noted that, for quality enhancement purposes, the Computing Programme of MPI has been accredited by the UK Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) since 2009 and, in 2013, MPI became the first higher education institution in Macao to have undergone a successful institutional review conducted by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, a UK quality assurance agency of international standing.

On 22 August, The Macao Polytechnic Institute hosted its Opening Ceremony for Academic Year 2014-2015 at the MPI Pavilion, welcoming more than 780 freshmen to join the MPI family. During his speech Professor Lei Heong Iok, President of the Institute, encouraged the new MPI members to do their best to focus on their studies and to develop into well-rounded individuals full of merit and virtue.

Cheong Wai Hang of School of Arts Won 2014 ACA World Championship

Cheong Wai Hang, a student from the Bachelor of Arts in Design Programme, School of Arts, won the championship of the 2014 Adobe Certified Associate (ACA) World Championship in California, U.S.A. Cheong stood out in the competition with 32 others representing 16 countries and brought home the top prize and became the world champion of the competition. His honour did credit to Macao, as well as to MPI. Cheong mentioned in the interview that, he had acquired good knowledge in Adobe since he enrolled in the Design Programme in the institute, which was the key to his success. In the coming year, he will try his best to learn more and participate in different international competitions related to his discipline.

MPI Held Its Graduation Ceremony for the Academic Year 2013-2014

On Tuesday, 17 June 2014, presided over by the Representative of Chief Executive of Macao S.A.R., Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Mr Cheong U and the President of Macao Polytechnic Institute Professor Lei Heong Iok, Macao Polytechnic Institute held its 2013-2014 Graduation Ceremony with nearly 600 graduates, awarded with the Outstanding Performance Awards and the bachelor’s degree. Mr Cai Siping, Deputy Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, representatives of the Executive Council, some members of the Legislative Assembly and a number of guests attended the ceremony.

Master Sculptor Wu Weishan’s Confucius Statue and Sculpture Studio Inaugurated at MPI

The world-famous master sculptor Professor Wu Weishan, President of the China Academy of Sculpture, recently created a Confucius statue for Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) as a gift. The statue was unveiled on 17 June 2014, together with the inauguration of Professor Wu's new sculpture studio at MPI. The studio has on display several of Professor Wu's masterpieces presented to MPI, which manifest his unique style of ‘freehand sculpture’. This will definitely be a highlight in the art of sculpture in Macao.

On 18 May 2014, His Excellency Professor Aníbal Cavaco Silva, the President of the Portuguese Republic, visited Macao Polytechnic Institute. During the visit the President had a dialogue meeting with MPI students which more than 200 students and staff attended.

UK’s Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education Visits MPI

Dr Stephen Jackson and Ms Jane Holt, Director and Deputy Director respectively of the Reviews Group of the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for Higher Education, UK, visited Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) on 16 April 2014, presenting the institutional review report to MPI and expressing their congratulations over the successful Institutional Review (IR) that MPI has recently undertaken.

Portuguese Minister of Education and Technology Expresses Appreciation for MPI’s Academic Research and Development in Portuguese Teaching

Prof. Nuno Crato, Minister of Education and Technology of Portugal, visited Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) on 13 April 2014, where he expressed his appreciation for the Institute’s Portuguese language and culture academic research and teaching and said he expected MPI would continue to play an active role in co-operation and exchanges between China and Portuguese speaking countries.

MPI Recognised by the 2014 Star Ratings of Chinese Universities as a 4-Star High-Standard University in Greater China

The 2014 Chinese Universities Evaluation Report compiled by cuaa.net was released on 26 March 2014. The report consists of various rankings and ratings, including amongst others the Chinese university ranking, the star ratings of universities in Greater China, and the Chinese university research ranking. The top five universities in the comprehensive ranking are Peking University, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University and Wuhan University.

MPI’s Honorary Professorship Conferred on Professor Shaw Chong-Hai

Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) has conferred an honorary professorship on Professor Shaw Chow-Hai. Professor Shaw is Dean of the College of Social Sciences of the Chinese Culture University in Taiwan, where he concurrently holds Directorships of the “Institute for Cross-Strait and Chinese Mainland Studies” and the “Institute for Macao Studies”.

MPI Successful in International Institutional Review

The internationally prominent Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), UK announced on its website on 13 February 2014 that Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) has achieved “confidence”, as judgement of its Institutional Review conducted in November 2013. This is the first internationally recognised institutional review ever undertaken by a higher education institution in Macao.

Quality of Teaching Receives Greater Recognition, 5,000 Local Applicants for MPI

The Macao Polytechnic Institute's application period for admission to its 2013/14 academic year undergraduate programmes has just ended. Following the trend of increasing numbers of applications over the past few years, the number this year rose again, breaking 5,000. Local secondary school students continued to give priority to MPI in their choices in selecting institutions for further education in Macao, with local secondary school principals ecommending nearly 300 students with outstanding academic achievements or other special talents.
