Introduction

Objectives and Targets:

2009 is the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the 10th anniversary of Macau's return to the Motherland. The economy of China has been growing rapidly for 30 years since the start of the reforms and opening to the outside world in 1978. The gross domestic product (in US dollar) of China has surpassed France, the United Kingdom and Germany recently and China has become the third largest economic power in the world. At the same time, China's rapid economic development has produced great impact. The commodity prices, especially that of real estate are growing up quickly. The unbalanced economic development has widened the gap between the east and the west as well as the rich and poor. On the other hand, administration, education, social welfare reforms and medical cares are obviously lagging behind the economic growth. The "China threat" argument is becoming a hot topic in some countries.

2009 is the right time to hold a high standard international conference to review and discuss China's progress in the last 30 years. The theme of the conference is "China's Peaceful Development: Opportunities and Challenges".

In order to guarantee the success of the conference, we have invited prominent figures as keynote speakers. In addition, noted scholars and experts are invited to present papers at the conference.

There are 9 topics and 2 designated group discussions in this conference. They are:
