  1. What is the basic information about Macao Polytechnic Institute?

    Established on September 16, 1991, Macao Polytechnic Institute is a public and forward-looking institute. For just 10 years since its inception, the Institute has grown and prospered into a modern and fully equipped teaching and research facility with a team of experienced and dedicated academic staff. Macao Polytechnic Institute comprises of:

    Training Unit:

    • MPI-Bell Centre of English (which is the only test centre of IELTS and BULATS in Macao)

    For Academic Year 2006/2007, we have over 2,700 students enrolled on degree programmes (full-time). Currently, there are 177 full-time teachers in MPI, including 23 Professors and 84 Associate Professors who have excellent academic background.

    The Institute has trained thousands of qualified professionals since its establishment, who work in different government departments, enterprises and research units in the fields of politics, economy, culture and education in Macao.

    Objectives and principle

    "To stand strongly in Macao, be supported by Motherland, facing the world, striving for the best" is the principle of MPI. The Institute strongly believes in nurturing talented students for a brighter future. Greatly supported by the Macao SAR government, the Institute continues to improve the quality of the academic team by hiring teachers with high education qualifications and abundant teaching experiences. According to the development of the social economy, the Institute also reforms and advances all programmes, building up an all-round academic system. At present, the major foci of the Institute is on the strengthening of professional training for (Chinese – English / Chinese - Portuguese) translation, business management, information technology, public administration, medical treatment, arts and sport, etc. In recent years, comparing with other universities and institutes, graduates of MPI have great performance in obtaining employment and further study.

    Facilities and equipment

    The Institute is making efforts in building up an E-campus. The academic facilities and equipment include:

    • Every classroom is equipped with networked computers, broadcasting systems and LCD projectors
    • 32computer laboratories, including computer laboratories for self-study (open 24 hours a day)
    • Over 50 servers providing different information services
    • Over 1,800 computers (the ratio of computers to students is 3.3:1)
    • The campus network runs at 50Mbps, with the transmission capacity of 2Gbps.
    • The campus wireless network supports IEEE 802.11 b/g (11Mbps, 54Mbps)
    • WebCT is in use in the Institute offering our teachers and students an online teaching and learning management platform.

    The Institute’s library continues to increase the capacity of books, providing reference books, professional periodicals and research reports for students. Students may have data research and studies through the multi-media database, E-database and E-system for newspaper clippings.

    Collaborations and Academic Exchanges

    Aiming to advance academic links, Macao Polytechnic Institute has established academic collaboration with different institutions and organizations. During recent years, we have invited noted scholars from Mainland and abroad to evaluate our professional equipment and academic quality, which have won their recognitions.

    The Institute has reached numerous agreements on credits recognition with academic institutions in the region and overseas. As long as students or graduates meet the requirements in English subjects and have fair academic achievement, they may transfer credits and gain entry into bachelor degree or postgraduate degree courses of the following institutions:

    1. MPI reserves the right to change/amend the contents of the programmes if necessary;

    3. While studying in MPI, students must strictly follow all regulations of the Institute (including any future amendment);
    4. MPI reserves the right to amend internal regulations;
    5. The Institute has reached agreements on credits recognition with the following academic institutions: University of Westminster, UCE Birmingham, United Kingdom, University of Worcester and Seton Hall University. As long as students or graduates of The School of Business meet the requirements in English subjects and have fair academic achievement, they may transfer credits and gain entry into bachelor degree or postgraduate degree courses of the above institutions;
    6. Students of Bachelor of Arts in Chinese-Portuguese Translation and Interpretation will study in MPI for the 1st, 3rd and 4th year. Those who pass all the subjects in their 1st year can join Instituto Polytécnico de Leiria for the 2nd year;
    7. Students of Bachelor of Arts in Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation will study in MPI for the 1st, 2nd and 4th year. Those who pass all the subjects in their 1st and 2nd year can join Beijing Language and Culture University for the 3rd year;
    8. Students or graduates of Bachelor of Science in Computing meet the requirements in English subjects and have fair academic achievement, they may transfer credits and gain entry into bachelor degree or postgraduate degree courses of Queen Mary, University of London;
    9. MPI students with credits recognition by other Universities, who wish to further their studies, must contact directly the Universities for enquiries and matters related to the applications.
  3. What is the eligibility for the application? What are the application procedures?

    Eligibility for Application

    The candidates must participate in the current year’s National College Entrance Examination (NCEE).

    Application Procedures

    (All candidates must follow the steps indicated below.)

    1. Online Pre-application
      Candidates should enter the following website
      (https://wapps.ipm.edu.mo/webappl/china.asp) for online pre-application.

      Note:

      Candidates must fill in their forms with honesty; otherwise the application will not be accepted.
    2. Transfer of the application fee
      Candidates should transfer the application fee MOP150 (approximately HKD146) to MPI's account in The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China or Bank of China through Telegram Transfer (T/T), or
      Payment can be done by a representative of the candidate at MPI's Treasury Department through cash, during office hours.
    3. Online Confirmation
      Candidates should enter MPI website for confirmation of payment and application after the transfer of the application fee is done (for cash payment, no confirmation is needed but still have to submit the NCEE score).
    4. Submit the NCEE Score
      Candidates should enter MPI website after attending the National College Entrance Examination to submit the NCEE score before the deadline of the online application.

  5. What are the requirements for the admission to MPI?

    The Institute will rank the candidates according to their achievements (dividing the score achieved from the national examination with the score standard of the second level). And the candidates’ choices are also in consideration.

    Note:

    Candidates of Bachelor of Management (instructed by English) and Bachelor of Science in E-Commerce are required to attend the English interview (the style and arrangements will be announced in MPI’s website).
  6. When will be the check-in for Academic Year 2007/2008?

    Students are required to check in at the beginning of September.

  7. Any arrangement of student hostel offered by MPI?

    The Institute’s student hostel is on shared double room basis. Each room is equipped with an air-conditioner. Shared facilities include living room, TV room, laundry room, canteen, table-tennis room, etc….

    Smart cards will be issued for students living at the hostels. Fees for electricity and laundry are of the students own account.

    The Institute has rented other apartments for student hostel (Nan Fang Building and Hua Nan Tai Building), with 2/3 or 4 rooms and one living room. The student hostel is on shared double room basis.

    All student hostels are managed by respective hostel administrator. All freshmen must stay at the student hostel. From the second academic year onwards, students with a written authorization of their parents, may opt for their own accommodation in Macao.

  8. How much are the tuition fees and other expenses?

    The total tuition fee for students of MPI’s Bachelor Degree programmes is around $45,000 ~ $50,000. Please see the followings:

    Tuition fee MOP24,800 per year (approximately HKD24,080)
    Hostel fee MOP11,350 per year (approximately HKD11,019)
    (on a ten months basis, during the Summer Holidays, the fees will be charged on a 15 days basis)
    Deposit for hostel MOP1,030 (approximately HKD1,000)
    (will be refunded on checkout when all accounts are settled)
    Medical Insurance MOP300 (approximately RMB240)

    Note:

    Tuition fee and hostel fee might be subjected to annual adjustment.
  9. What is the eligibility for the Scholarships?

    Students will be awarded scholarships automatically according to their academic achievements. Details are as follows:

    A. Scholarships for Exceptional New Students from Mainland China

    6 Quotas (MOP235, 280.00 for each recipient)

    Art Courses:

    Design, Visual Arts (Educational), and Music (Educational): 1 quota each.

    Evaluation:

    For the 1st academic year, the students are ranked according to their performance in MPI’s admission exam (written examination and interview); the student with the highest score in each program will be awarded the Scholarship. In order to achieve a continuous Scholarship, the student(s) must obtain GPA of 3.0 or above and must be recommended by their School principals. Taken that the recipient(s) fail to meet the above requirements for one academic year, the scholarship will be terminated automatically and never more will the student be entitled, whatsoever, for this scholarship.

    Value of the scholarship:

    Tuition and hostel fees will be waived, and a monthly subsidy of MOP2, 000 will be granted.

    Other Courses:

    Management/Accounting & Finance, Chinese & Portuguese Translation, and Science of Computer Studies: 1 quota each.

    Eligibility:

    The student has to attain or exceed the foremost level in the 2008 National College Entrance Examination (NCEE) in his/her native provinces / municipalities.

    Evaluation:

    For the 1st academic year, by ranking the students according to their achievements (dividing the NCEE score with the native score standard of the foremost level); the student with the highest quotient in each program will be awarded the Scholarship. In order to achieve a continuous Scholarship, the student(s) must obtain GPA of 3.0 or above and must be recommended by their School principals. Taken that the recipient(s) fail to meet the above requirements for one academic year, the scholarship will be terminated automatically and never more will the student be entitled, whatsoever, for this scholarship.

    Value of the scholarship:

    Tuition and hostel fees will be waived, and a monthly subsidy of MOP2, 000 will be granted.

    B. Macao Foundation Scholarships for Students from Mainland China

    Quota:

    Bachelor of Management & Bachelor of Accounting & Finance: 1 quota per program (MOP120, 000 per recipient);
    Bachelor of Science in Computer Studies: 2 quotas (MOP120, 000 per recipient).

    Eligibility:

    The student has to attain or exceed the foremost level in the 2008 National College Entrance Examination (NCEE) in his/her native provinces / municipalities.

    Evaluation:

    For the 1st academic year, the students (of Management, Accounting & Finance, and Science in Computer Studies) are ranked according to their achievements (dividing the NCEE score with the native score standard of the foremost level); the Scholarship will be awarded to the following recipients: 1 student of Management, 1 student of Accounting & Finance (each with the second highest quotient in their programme), 2 students of Science in Computer Studies (with the second and third highest quotient). In order to achieve a continuous Scholarship, the student(s) must obtain GPA of 3.0 or above and must be recommended by their School principals. Taken that the recipient(s) fail to meet the above requirements for one academic year, the scholarship will be terminated automatically and never more will the student be entitled, whatsoever, for this scholarship.

    Value of the Scholarship:

    MOP30, 000 will be granted annually.

    C. Scholarships for Outstanding Academic Achievement (MOP10, 000):

    Eligibility:

    Higher Diploma programs

    Evaluation:

    Students from year 1 to year 3 of each program with high moral values and the highest mark by the end of each academic year are eligible.

    Value of the Scholarship:

    50% (MOP10, 000) of the recipient’s tuition fee in the following academic year will be waived.

    D. Scholarships offered by various Departments of Macao SAR and other organizations / enterprises (approximately 50 items):

    Eligibility:

    Evaluation:

    Students (various programs), with high moral values and great achievements, who fulfilled the requirements stipulated by the sponsors, and recommended by the School principals, are eligible.

    Amount:

    The amount (one time basis) of the Scholarship is decided by the sponsors.
